The MG ZS was built in Longbridge, Birmingham, UK from 2001 to 2005. The MG ZS was based upon the Honda Civic and the Honda Domani and was originlally developed with the KV6 V6 naturally aspirated engine, the MG ZS was intended to be a sporting family car. The MG ZS was available as a 4 door saloon or a 5 door hatchback and is especially noted for its impressive handling and smooth progresssive power delivery in 2.5 Litre V6 form.

We have owned an MG ZS 180 for many years. The car is used daily (Photo above) and at the time writing, it has covered over 120000 miles.

One of the great attractions of the ZS 180 is the excellent front wheel drive drive and performance without need of a Turbo charger or super charger (ZS180 supercharger kits are available elsewhere). In standard form, the ZS180 produces 175bhp. Fitting a quality induction kit gives a noticeable increase in performance (we have fitted an ITG induction kit) of approx 10% over the standard configuration.

We would also recommend the fitting of uprated clutch hydraulics as the standard plastic components are liable to failure over a period of time. We have fitted a Sheddist system and despite having since replaced both sheddist supplied master cylinder and slave cylinders (after 2 years use); we are very happy with the system.

MG ZS`s came with 6 cylinder petrol engine or 4 cylinder petrol or Diesel engines as below

MG ZS105 – 1.4 Litre K-Series petrol engine -102 bhp = 0#8211;60 mph in 10.1 seconds and a top speed of 110 mph (177 kmh).

MG ZS110 – 1.6 Litre K-Series petrol engine -107 bhp = 0#8211;60 mph in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 119 mph (192 kmh).

MG ZS120 – 1.8 Litre K-Series petrol engine -115 bhp = 0#8211;60 mph in 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 122 mph (196 kmh).

MG ZS120 Auto – 1.8 Litre K-Series petrol engine -115 bhp = 0#8211;60 mph in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph (185 kmh).

MG ZS180 – 2.5 Litre KV6-Series petrol engine -175 bhp = 0#8211;60 mph in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 139 mph (224 kmh).

MG ZR TD 115 2.0 Litre L-Series diesel engine – 111 bhp = 0#8211;60 mph in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph (193 kmh).

Although the MG ZS K series engine was supposedly plagued by cylinder head issues (the K series engine uses an aluminium cylinder head), this was usually caused by not keeping the MG ZS Radiator sufficiently full. The engine can then overheat and the cyclinder head gasket can fail. Potential problems can be avoided by having the MG ZS cyclinder head skimmed and fitting a new – uprated cyclinder head gasket (as fitted to the new – Chinese MG TF) and possibly a also fitting a new water pump.

The KV6 engine (as fitted to the MG ZS180) does not have any cyclinder head gasket issues. However, the thermostat is made of plastic and is located between the two banks of cylinders. Because of its design (designed by BMW) it will fail and replacing it is not easy.

The KV6 engine (as fitted to the MG ZS180) was also used in certain Land Rovers, the Rover 75 V6 and the MG ZT190.

MG ZS

A common modification on the MG ZS is to fit the larger Front and Rear Disk Brakes and calipers from the MG ZS180 (2.5 Litre V6).

Although the MG ZS K series petrol engines were also used in sports cars such as the Cateram and also in the MGF and MG TF, they are not cheap to modify. A common conversion is therfore to fit a Rover 2.0 Litre T series turbocharged (T16) engine, which as standard produces 197 bhp. However; if performing this modification, it is essential that the brakes also uprated (as above).

The MG ZS TD (Turbo Diesel) 2.0 L series diesel engine can be cheaply modified. Modifications include increasing the turbo boost pressure 19psi (this should not cause issues), whilst fuel injectors from the Rover SDI feature an injection nozzle which allow more fuel to be injected. If the engine is also remapped and an induction kit is fitted, then a performance increase to approx 160bhp is common (but fuel economy will obviously suffer).
