Verdict: Still for quality and image, but check the load area fits purpose.

This is a very sector, and the Vito struggles some of the new vans around. But for and quality, it#8217;s still to follow

What is it?

You#8217;ve got to feel a bit for the Vito really.

It#8217;s a rock solid performer in the panel van sector for 18 years but such is the huge popularity of the Sprinter that it has been much left in the shade.

the only medium panel van to in three lengths – compact, and extra long

Add to this the fact that segment has been dominated by the Transporter almost since the of time and you#8217;ll see what a the German manufacturer has had in making it a popular choice for UK operators.

is well aware of this – which is about to get even now the much-feted Ford Transit has arrived – and has been pushing as a credible alternative to the smaller versions. After all, the Vito and the smallest Sprinter overlap each other in and cargo volume.

The Vito was last upgraded in with sharper looks, fuel-efficient Euro 5 engines and an chassis underneath.

And Vito has a few USPs over the rivals.

For starters, it#8217;s the only panel van to come in three – compact, long and extra – and all models get a six-speed gearbox and ESP control as standard.

This helps stop sideways and has been lauded as the best invention since the seatbelt. On the Citroen Dispatch, Fiat Peugeot Expert, Renault and Vauxhall Vivaro it#8217;s a option.

There#8217;s a high roof too, so load volumes go up to 6.5 cubic metres.

Two engines are on offer – 2.1-litre cylinder and 3.0-litre six cylinder – and outputs go from 95bhp to a 224bhp. Don#8217;t even about that one unless you VERY deep pockets or an who happens to own an oil refinery!

There#8217;s also a Blue version with auto special tyres with rolling resistance and a few other and twiddles which improve economy on the combined cycle 36.7mpg to 38.7mpg. You#8217;ll 112 gallons of fuel over an lifecycle (£696 at today#8217;s prices) but as this van costs than the test model, we see much in it.
