Mercedes SL 350

launched in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: A year after it was unveiled to the world, the sixth generation of the Mercedes SL series is finally here.

The SL 350 BlueEfficiency was officially launched for the domestic market at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre last Friday, with this year marking the 60th anniversary of the SL series.

“The SL is the brand ambassador for Mercedes like no other car. Only once in every 10 years do we launch a new model,” said Kai Schlickum, vice-president of sales and marketing for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

“It’s a very rare opportunity to be in the position I am in now, where I get to be a part of the company when an SL is launched,” he added.

The SL 350 comes with many improvements in many aspects from its predecessors, such as fuel efficiency.

The model’s new V6 engine retains the displacement at 3,499cc, yet uses only 6.8 litres of fuel per 100km, a decrease of 30% in fuel consumption from its predecessor. Yet, the higher mileage does not “tame” or impede the latest SL’s performance as it can hit zero to 100kph in 5.9 seconds, or is three-tenths of a second faster than the previous model.

“It would have been unheard of two or three years ago for any car manufacturer to be able to bring a car with so much torque, so much power, but uses only as much as a four-cylinder engine’s petrol (consumption),” said Schilickum.

In effect, he said, the new V6 engine is 10kg lighter as it requires a smaller fuel tank.

The latest addition to the SL series is promised to take the meaning of the initials “SL” — super light — literally. Its body shell is fully made from aluminium, which makes the car 110kg lighter than if it were made from steel.

The model also introduces new innovations namely the Magic Vision Control, where the wiper’s washer fluid is applied in front of the wiper blade lip rather than on the windshield, and the Frontbass system, which uses the free space in the aluminium structures in front of the footwell as resonance space for the bass loudspeakers.

Its dimensions also have become bigger. The SL 350’s interior is 50mm longer and 57mm wider to provide more comfort.

At the launch, the SL 350 was displayed on a podium between two older SL models, which are from the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s personal collection.

The sultan was in attendance to present the Sultan’s Cup, a trophy given to the owner of an automobile that gained the sultan’s interest.

The SL 350 is the seventh model launched by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia this year, a record for the company. The model’s starting price is RM898,888 which Schilikum said is marginally lower than the previous SL model.

It had been a busy week for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia. Other than the SL’s introduction here, the company also launched Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a new local entity of the German luxury automaker, to carry out financial services here.

Mercedes-Benz Services offers innovative financing options as well as insurance packages for customers to purchase Mercedes-Benz vehicles and FUSO commercial vehicles, also from the German group.
