: new entry in the E class

By Jim ( Bio and Archives ) Friday, August 17,

The words #8220;entry level#8221; and may sound a lot like an oxymoron, but in the of the E 300 4MATIC sedan, it#8217;s nearly appropriate.

That#8217;s the E 300 is the low sedan on the E-Class totem one that extends right up to heights as represented by the company#8217;s E63 AMG sport sedan that is quite the tire shredder.

you sacrifice some stuff to be the level, chief of which in particular case is that you get a powerful V6 engine than find in other gas-fired In this case, you get a 3.5 liter plant (despite the car#8217;s designation that could you think it#8217;s only liters) that puts out 248 @ 6500 rpm and 251 lb.-ft. of torque 3400-4500 rpm) – but it#8217;s to get this fairly big car moving nicely. It isn#8217;t as nice as the 3.5 engine you can get in the E 350, however, the Benz folks rate at 302 and 273 lb.-ft. – an engine I got to sample in an E 350 year.

So if you like additional oomph you may to look there instead, or to the E63 AMG#8217;s 518/516 hp/torque, if really power hungry. the price rises with the Unlike the gas mileage…

But other the power and torque, you don#8217;t a lot of other important stuff with the E300, and the base is nearly ten grand cheaper the E 350 4MATIC – not a bad incentive to go #8220;cheap#8221;.

The generation of E class is a handsome (or wagon), large enough to five quite comfortably and enough to be a, well, Mercedes-Benz. I think it#8217;s the most E class ever, but its chiseled is classy and imposing and every bit – right down to the three star perched on its prow in a way prompted my wife to jokingly say she it easier to aim the car with it there, a gun sight.

The E 300 puts its power to the ground of Mercedes#8217; 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven speed automatic and the company#8217;s 4MATIC permanent all drive system. It isn#8217;t a #8220;fun to drive#8221; combo, but no slouch, either as long as you that this is a luxury not a high performance one. Not there#8217;s anything wrong that…

If you want to up the performance you can press a button mounted the media controller thingy on the console and switch from the E (Economy) to S (Sport). Not surprisingly, I the sport mode because it the car up tad and makes it a bit more interesting to It may cost you at the pump, but such is the for enjoying life.

The E 300 is pretty loaded, though I was to find that leather is an Other than that, the base model comes nearly everything you could The audio system is typically which means it offers nice sound.

In this it#8217;s a harmon/kardon surround system whose display on the LCD screen looks like an old analog tuner.

The front are very comfortable, heated of and offer 14 way power adjustment. It takes some getting to the way the car tightens the seat/shoulder belts you when you get in, but it#8217;s also of a neat illustration of Mercedes-Benz#8217; to safety.

That commitment also you get a plethora of other safety including a warning for times the car you might be getting sleepy. It up on the instrument panel as a coffee cup and though it never became while I had the car I figure it must something like a hand out of the steering wheel hub and slapping you in the with a … fish. Or Mercedes has come up with more elegant.

There are blind spot warnings and a departure warning that#8217;s obtrusive because it sends a through the steering wheel – but at it doesn#8217;t fight you like the M does.

And of course you get disc all around, with ABS and the other and there#8217;s electronic stability and control.

Besides the good the E 300 also comes with climate control and a power The test car provided by Mercedes-Benz also had a rear view and navigation system.

And two clocks! There#8217;s a typical clock on the LCD screen, and for some reason M-B has chosen to put a big analog one on the panel, where it seems of out of place since it#8217;s only visible to the driver. My tried craning her neck to see it and me of driving too fast: 12:35 in a 60

One thing that takes a bit of used to, but which would natural to owners of the car before is the way Mercedes-Benz mounts the signal and cruise control stalks. cars just put one stalk on the side of the steering column – for lights, wipers, etc. – and it sticks out from the center of the Here, however, that is down at about eight and a cruise control stalk out at about 10 o#8217;clock.

I found myself hitting the instead of the turn signal though by the time I took the car this was becoming less of an

And really, if that#8217;s about the of my complaints it shows just how a car this is.

And it is a good car, an car, I daresay. It may come as a tad bland compared to some of its such as those from BMW and but that shouldn#8217;t detract its overall appeal. And while I I#8217;d rather opt for the E 350#8217;s power (a nice compromise I#8217;d probably go broke the speeding tickets I#8217;d get the AMG!), the E 300 is still a decent and a luxurious place to travel.

The E 300 starts at $57,900 Canadian.
