THE FINEST SALOON I HAVE EVER DRIVEN, FORGET BMW!

I have always been a masses Mercedes fan, and for my birthday my family rented a Mercedes C-Class for me. Avis very kindly upgraded me to an E-Class. I was expecting a 2.1 turbo diesel, or maybe a 200 Kompressor.

I was absolutely thrilled when I found I had the 3.0i V6 engine.

The image, well what can I say. I think this car looks fantastic. It looks subtle, it looks sporty, it looks. well, I just think it’s got it all!

The previous shape E-Class looked very ‘square’ and bulky, but the new shape looks very sleak.

The inside is fantastic. There are loads of little storage spaces, even a small electronically opened hatch above the gear selector. The quality of the materials used on the dash, the controls, and the upholstery are just what you would expect from a luxury saloon car.

The controls could seem a little daunting to someone who has been used to an older car with a lot less equipment, but nonetheless the controls are very sensibly laid out and easy to use.

The dashboard itself looks very state of the art. The dials looks great, and in the very centre there is a screen which can be used to display your speed digitally, the radio/CD options, trip counters, etc. This very cleverly incorporates the cruise control as well. Whereas with a lot of other cars, your not really sure what speed the cruise control is set at; with the E-Class a series of segments work their way around the speedo to indicate the selected speed.

The seats are very comfortable, but then you would expect that. This model also featured ambient lighting which was great, and very relaxing without being distracting whilst driving.

The equipment levels are fantastic, again as you would expect.

Loads of airbags, ABS, traction control with ASR (Acceleration Skid Reduction), Cruise Control, Climate Control, Automatic Headlights and Wipers, 7 speed Tiptronic transmission. The one thing I was quite disappointed at was that the car did not have parking sensors as standard, which I would really expect on a car of this calibre.

In terms of handling, it’s fantastic. The traction control and ABS really work together. The conditions whilst driving this car weren’t great, and so I didn’t turn the traction control off at any point.

But why would you want to when the car handles so beautifully with it on! It really does make you feel very safe and secure, even on sharp bends; and the suspension makes sure that everyone in the car barely notices any of it going on!

In terms of performance, well, this is where I disappointed myself. When I found out it was a 3.0 V6 I was quite nervous. The most powerful car I had driven before was a 2.0 16V Turbo.

Not to mention the price tag on this car must have been around Ј30,000 brand new. Therefore, I didn’t thrash the car or perform any kick-downs as I would have liked. Nor did I really use the sports mode on the transmission.

However, one thing I will say is that it glides effortlessly to high speeds (Not that I will mention any particular speeds here). I had an idea of how powerful this car was through the cruise control. For example, on my journey there were a lot of interconnected roundabouts and then dual carriageways, and so on.

I therefore had the cruise control set to 70MPH, and would simply turn it back on after I was over the roundabouts. For these I would have to slow to around 40MPH. The point I’m trying to get to is that when turning the cruise control back on, it really did push me back into my seat and got back to 70MPH very very quickly without ease.

Whether this was performing a kick-down is not something I would be able to answer.

I was dreading the fuel economy, especially as I was driving quite a large round trip! However, on a full tank of petrol, driven quite sensibly, I managed to only use half a tank by doing almost 200 miles.

In terms of reliability, I cannot really comment, as I only drove this car for two days – but had no issues with the car in any aspect!

This car is superb. I can only dream that I would be able to own one for myself. But for those of you with enough money to go and buy one of these, please do not even consider an Audi or a BMW.

You really can’t go wrong with the new Mercedes E-Class.
