CGI Estate

Mercedes’ new estate follows the pattern set by the model launched earlier year; solid technical combined with a reassuring nod to the Mercedes values many had been lost as the company sales outside its established

The mix of tradition and progress is a different one in the of the estate – although not in the sense the estate is either more or more progressive than the Rather, there is a whole of the Mercedes tradition connected estate cars that the engineers and designers have had to and reinterpret in order to produce new model.

The first thing to say about tradition of making estate is that it’s nothing as old as you might imagine. Although had previously been officially hearse, ambulance and estate the first in-house Mercedes the T version of the W123 model, was introduced in 1977. Volvo and to name but two, had been big estates for decades by the time the joined in.

And the most obviously traditional of the new E-Class’s styling – a pronounced over the rear wheel-arch that found on the Mercedes from the Fifties – isn’t a part of the Mercedes estate as the Ponton was only ever as a saloon.

But one traditional feature on the new car is estate-specific, and on the anachronistic; an optional third row of that by my reckoning makes the only estate car on the market can still carry seven, as as the sixth and seventh occupants too tall or too heavy. Other have long since this arrangement and instead customers who want to carry numbers of passengers towards people-carriers and SUVs.

Advantage Mercedes, I say, SUVs and people-carriers still match the driving dynamics of a saloon or estate. The traditional never to buy a Mercedes with a petrol engine or a manual can now be safely ignored. Even the E200 CGI with its 1.8-litre engine provides enough go for big estate and Mercedes’ latest is much sweeter than the older manual boxes.

But if you’re still sceptical, find that the larger and automatics are better than ever been, too.
