Mercedes Benz S Class 2012 Review

The Mercedes Benz S-Class has always been the pinnacle of the brand when it came to state-of-the-art technology combined with high luxury and comfort. Things haven’t changed regarding this matter and the S-Class 2012 remains true to the same ideology. With each passing year the technology evolves and the S-Class needs to remain at the top of what a luxury sedan can offer, so without further ado let’s take a look at what the latest model brings to the table.

In terms of engine variants, the 5.5 liter V8 engine found in the S550 has been replaced by a smaller yet more powerful 4.7 liter V8 unit. The new powerplant alongside two turbochargers can develop 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, 47 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque more than what the older 5.5 liter V8 delivers. Despite the considerable growth in power the new unit is more fuel efficient than the previous engine, increasing the mileage from 14/21 mpg to 15 mpg city 23 mpg highway.

If fuel efficiency is what you’re after the S-Class 2012 is also offered as an S400 Hybrid able to cover 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Furthermore, the S350 4Matic BlueTEC comes with a 3.0 liter diesel engine rated at 31 mpg highway.

On the other side of the coin if you’re looking for more power at the cost of fuel efficiency than the S600 is your answer. The 2012 S600 retains its V12 engine which develops 510 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. The S600 can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and as far as fuel efficiency goes, the V12 can cover 11 mpg city and 17 mpg highway.

On the exterior the new S-Class undergone a few changes including a redesigned front grille alongside a new front bumper, chrome touches, LED running lights and taillights. On the interior that the new S-Class offers the highest degree of luxury without shadow of a doubt, but compared to the previous model the 2012 S makes a better use of the ambient lighting and is now offering a choice of three moods including ice-blue, white and amber.

Safety-wise the new S-class received an improved night-vision system called Night View Assist PLUS, as well as a Pre-Safe braking system.

Price-wise the Mercedes Benz S-Class 2012 has a MSRP of $94,500, placing it at the top of the list compared to the $71,000 BMW 7-Series 2013 or the $67,600 Lexus LS 460 .

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been crowned Best Luxury Car for the seventh consecutive year in a row at the 2012 What Car? Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday, 11 January.

Chas Hallett, Editor in Chief at What Car? Magazine recognised the amazing achievement and added that ‘the S-Class still has the measure of its rivals on ability and build quality, and it retains its value better to boot’.

Superb mechanical and aerodynamic refinement and the sublime cabin of the S-Class impressed the judges who cited that ‘it’s simply a staggering piece of engineering’.

‘We know we have a great car in the S-Class and are delighted that What Car? recognise this too. Winning once is great but seven wins really asserts the S-Class as the pinnacle of luxurious motoring at its best. Our flagship saloon has continued to impress since we launched it in 2005 but we haven’t rested on our laurels, since last years win we have introduced stop/start to the S-Class range which has had a positive impact on both fuel efficiency and CO 2 emissions,’ said Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK Limited.

The S 350 BlueTEC now returns 45.6 mpg on the combined cycle, an improvement of ten per cent and emits 164 g/km of CO 2 which is a seven per cent reduction.

Since its launch in 2005 over 440,000 S-Class have been sold worldwide and over13,800 of these were sold in the UK. The S 350 BlueTEC is available on the road from £60,605.00 and- £64,605.00 for the S 350 BlueTEC LWB.
