R-Class SUV

The Mercedes Benz R-Class is a product of the Germany based Daimler AG, introduced to the market under the brand name Mercedes Benz, a subsidiary of Daimler itself. The Mercedes Benz R-Class functions perfectly as an MPV – Multi-Purpose Vehicle. It came on the market as the first full sized MPV to be ever produced by Mercedes Benz. It comes in an option of two wheel bases, the 2980mm and 3215mm variants.

Mercedes Benz availed model variants that use the Bluetec diesel engine in 2009, while those using the BlueEfficiency technology were also released at the same time, but to different markets. The Mercedes Benz R-Class was first marketed as the Sports Cruiser, and was later on marketed as the Family Tourer.

The current Mercedes Benz R-Class comes in two trim levels, namely the R350 Bluetec and the R350, which both trims feature an all-wheel drive function and a seven speed automatic transmission. The R-Class provides for a 2x2x2 seating arrangement, while provision is made for a 2x3x2 configuration as an option. A 3.5 L engine delivering 268 horsepower is found on the R350, using V6 technology and is dressed up with 19 inch alloy wheels.

Additional features on the R350 are the rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver seat, Bluetooth and Mercedes’ COMAND control interface. A 3.0 L turbo diesel V6 engine powers the R350 Bluetec trim and delivers 210 horsepower. Also found standard across all models of the R-Class is the MB-Tex premium vinyl upholstery.

Additional features you would expect to find on upgrades are the panoramic sunroof, a power-adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a power liftgate, adaptive xenon HID headlights, a rear seat entertainment system, a navigation system and an iPod interface.

Mercedes Benz did introduce in the year 2006 the R350 and R500 variants and at the time, these could comfortably accommodate six passengers. The R500 came with a 5.0 L engine that delivered 302 horsepower and adopted V8 technology. The R500 comes as a 2.5 tonne and is dressed in the 18 inch wheels, featuring the heated front seats. Other models to be released in the year 2007 were the R320 CDI and the R63 AMG.

Similar to all Mercedes’ “63 AMG models”, the R63 AMG came with a 6.2 L engine, with the typical power and speed of a sports car. The R63 AMG uses a V8 engine and delivers well when it comes to thrust, recording a 503 horsepower and having capabilities to reach the 96km/hr mark in just 4.9 seconds. Other distinct features on the R63 AMG, other than the acceleration capabilities, are the larger wheels and tyres and a much firmer suspension tuning.

Standard features across the range are quite uniform, save for engine capacities and of course on the R63 AMG which is at the top of the range. Features include the automatic transmission gearbox, MP3 Player, side and curtain Airbags, stability control, third row seats and traction control, while the Navigation system, iPod input and Satellite radio and DVD player were all optional on the R350 4Matic and R320 CDI.

When it comes to safety and security, the R-Class comes fitted with modern high tech features that cut across passive and active safety features, such as the stability control with a rollover sensor, antilock disc brakes with brake assist, active front head restraints, side-impact airbags for front and second-row passengers, and side curtain airbags for all three rows. The R-Class has a very hefty list of add-ons, features which bring upgraded versions to their own standing. Notable add-ons include the new seventh seat, leather upholstery, burl walnut trim, 12-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system, satellite radio, park-assist sensors, a navigation system with a rearview camera, a panoramic glass sunroof, 19- or 20-inch wheels, Bluetooth, keyless ignition, heated seats and steering wheel, a power rear liftgate, three-zone climate control, a rear-seat entertainment system, adaptive cruise control, and glovebox-mounted six-CD changer and dedicated iPod interface.

The Mercedes Benz R-Class does exceptionally well when compared to most if not all vehicles in its product line. The advanced technology that defines the R-Class makes this car exceptionally comfortable and very apt in many settings. It is a choice that is quite easy to make.
