Luxury sedans are usually more high profile, but for what the Mazda Millenia lacks in flash, it makes up for in power and performance.

Mazda Millenia Origins

The 1990’s saw a revolution in the auto industry when it came to luxury sedans. Every major car manufacturer was in stiff competition to make the biggest splash in the market. In 1995, Mazda threw its hat in the ring with the Millenia. The Millenia follows the company’s original inception of the car, the Mazda 929. The 929 originally used the name the Mazda Amati.

Financial issues forced Mazda to scrap the Amati brand. The 929 ceased production after negligible success to make way for the Millenia.

About the Mazda Millenia

The base model Millenia contains a 2.5-liter, 170 horsepower V-6 engine. Mazda outfits the S model Millenia with a supercharged 2.3-liter, Miller cycle V-6 engine. The Miller engine consists of a belt-driven torque and power booster and boasts 210 horsepower.

It gets an alluring 28 mpg on the highway.

The Mazda Millenia has a front-engine, front drive, and a four-speed automatic transmission. The gas tank holds 18 gallons, and the spacious interior seats up to five passengers. The Millenia also boasts a solid list of standard equipment, including auto climate control, cruise control, keyless entry, power controls, heated seats, and CD audio.

Mazda has always been able to design a beautiful car, and the Millenia stands out.

The flush-mounted, crystal-lens headlamps mark a design innovation that has been duplicated ad nausea by other manufacturers, and the chrome-plated grille enhances the Millenia’s overall appearance.

Supple, cream-colored, leather-faced seats make sitting in the Millenia more than just comfortable, it makes it an experience in fighting off comfort-inducing slumber. The center console and interior door panels feature wood grain accents. The instrument cluster comes equipped with analog dials, intelligently designed for the convenience of the driver.

Mazda Millenia Evolution

Mazda Millenia

Mazda began production of the Millenia in 1993, and the first version debuted in Europe under the name Xedos 9. The Millenia also released in Japan as the Eunos 800. The American release in 1995 represents the first version to be referred to as the Mazda Millenia. Mazda’s marketing of the Millenia, or lack thereof, seemed to stymie its sales potential.

Only 16,000 Millenias sold in 1999, down from 18,000 in 1998. As expected, 2002 marked the final year of production for the Millenia and included no significant changes to the design.

The base model of the Millenia includes leather interior, wood and chrome paneling, and high-quality paint. The only drawbacks cited by customers include the way the Millenia handles on rough surfaces and the lack of foot space and thigh support in the rear seats.

Mazda made no significant changes to the Millenia between the 1995 and 1996 model years. The 1997 model features a redesigned center console, reflector headlights, and higher final drive gearing, which gives a marked improvement on low-end performance.

Mazda didn’t change the 1998 model but made big changes to the 1999 Millenia. The biggest of these changes is the price cut from $2500 to $5000 on the base and S models. Additional changes consist of a redesigned grille, an added rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, and new chrome and wood on the interior.

The 2000 model year of the Millenia saw some small yet nifty additions such as remote keyless entry, a lighted ignition switch, and improved handling through a steering-gear redesign. Mazda also released a special edition model in 2000, which has an in-dash six-disc changer and suede upholstery.

Mazda became more safety conscious in the 2001 model year, adding front side airbags and new stabilizer bars. The body of the vehicle also improves to give better torsion rigidity. The exterior styling of the 2001 Millenia gives it a sportier look, while the updated interior provides the luxurious appeal that Millenia lovers appreciate.
