I a 2002 ES300, 10 years old Sent to the dealer to do the 120k and 90k together. They quoted the 90k with timing belt of 7.6 hours labor and total 120k maintenance 5.6 hours and $888 in total.

I want the regular 120k plus the timing belt (they quoted 4 hours and total $523), and they to change the water pump as (1.5 hours labor and $345). Total with 10% VIP it’s $1,500.

Then, things happened. After took the timing belt they found the the cam seals and seal leaking oil, and the of the idler pulleys the timing rides are noisy. AND the drive are worn.

Replacing all these is $500.

Does it seem reasonable, or just made it up to make money (especailly the 2nd parts they took the timing off)? What about the How much should I negotiate to?

Any is apprecaited!

Koala, I don’t think is unheard of. I’m a DIY guy that’s had as long as I’ve been

I have a 01 Highlander V6 – is the same engine as your ES the Toyota 1MZ-FE. I have a that’s a Lexus tech and I did the belt/pump with him. actually planning on replacing my with an 02 or 03 ES300.

It’s a car with a good engine I know how to work on).

the timing belt runs the pump and the belt will fail before the pump. You want the have to pull back off when the pump after the belt change, so a good idea to do them at the time.

As for the pulleys, it’s hit or miss. were fine. They do a key part of the running the engine. I did to replace the belt tensioner.

We for leaks on the seals, and they all ok. My nephew warned me that seals would probably be

It didn’t take me extra 1.5 to add the water pump to my stuff, so it on how trustworthy the tech was that did it. All and done, 5.5 hours for a timing with pump is GOOD. My says he’s done and they take him 6. It took me 10 with my home tools.

All said and done, with the water pump and seals, you have to do anything on that of the engine for a long while, so if you on keeping the car another 5 years, see if talk down, but nothing out of the ordinary for this specific engine. They charge a lot for and about a 40% upsell on the parts. I got my and pump for $120 – 40 for the and 80 for the pump.

This might give you ammo for getting the charge

Good luck!
