LeMons Washington DC: The Winners!

The Capitol Offense 24 Hours of LeMons is in the books, and the first-ever Mercury to take an overall LeMons win is in the winner#8217;s circle. Meanwhile, General Motors racks up yet another Index of Effluency triumph.

The Anti-EPA Racing 1985 Mercury Cougar XR7 took the lead early on Saturday and held onto it for the rest of the weekend. Huge numbers of Fox-platform Fords have raced in the 24 Hours of LeMons, but this is only the second to turn the most laps in a race (the first was the Formula M For Mullet Mustang. at the 2009 Gator-O-Rama event). Anti-EPA did everything right: zero black flags, zero mechanical problems, quick lap after quick lap after quick lap.

The team had contended in past races, but engine failure sidelined the big Mercury each time. This weekend, everything fell into place. Congratulations, Anti-EPA Racing!

While air-cooled Volkswagens have picked up four Index of Effluency wins (including one last weekend ), no manufacturer can hope to match General Motors for number of times taking home LeMons racing#8217;s top prize. Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac have each earned at least one Index of Effluency trophy, and now Geo#8217;s IOE triumph in Michigan has been followed up with another.

The World Class Motorsports Livers Geo Storm finished 11th in a field of 117 entries, shaming all Bavaria by stomping a half-dozen BMW E30s and bringing glory to fans of badge-engineered Isuzus the world over. Good work, World Class Motorsports Livers!

The Organizer#8217;s Choice prize went to the amazing Mercillac, a two-time-race-winning Mercedes-Benz S500 with much of the body of a 1963 Cadillac grafted on.

Team Sputnik B earned the Most Heroic Fix award when their Nissan Stanza wagon— a Nissan Prairie given the Stanza name in North America, in spite of being something like a sixth cousin five times removed to the US-Market Stanza car— ate one of its front hubs and the replacement parts were unobtainium anywhere within a six-hour drive of West Virginia. So, Team Sputnik stayed up all night grinding the spindle on some random junkyard hub that was sort of similar to the correct part and making it work.

The Vermont Maple Runners were on their way to a solid top-five finish with their Volvo 262C Bertone when the car shed a wheel and wiped out an hour before the checkered flag. 20th place… and an I Got Screwed trophy.
