While there was some initial desire to segment the line by offering Discovery only as a three-door, a more practical five-door version was introduced before the vehicle was exported.

Standard equipment included seating for five, and a small third seat was optional.

Land Rover devoted a lot of attention to Discovery#39;s interior look, and even went so far as to hire design consultants in the planning stage. The result was judged very pleasant by most, and the vehicle won a home-market design award.

The first Discovery SUVs sold in the U.S. came with a 182-horsepower 3.9-litre V-8. A slightly more torquey and economical 4-litre version of the V-8 replaced it soon thereafter. Diesel powerplants were available in the home market and most export markets but not in the U.S.

While the Discovery#39;s specifications and interior amenities seemed to make it a natural for everyday use, its on-road manners were not the equal of most competitive SUVs.

The second generation of the Discovery premiered in the home market in 1998 and arrived stateside for the 1999 model year. Like other Land Rover offerings, it was classically styled and very well equipped. Inside, it offered the upscale environment that the brand#39;s SUV buyers had come to expect.

Standard features included power front seats, a great stereo sound system, and dual-zone climate control. With permanent four-wheel drive and an automatic descent control, it was a prodigious off-road machine. Other technical enhancements, including a hydraulic suspension system that minimized body roll and automatic load leveling, contributed to the brand#39;s high-tech reputation.

Engine choices ranged from a 182-horsepower 4-litre V-8 to a fuel-thirsty 217-horsepower 4.6-litre V-8.

Again, some reviewers found that the vehicle#39;s on-road behavior was less than acceptable, while it#39;s off-road capabilities were unquestionably top shelf. However, the prestige and luxury that came with the Land Rover brand were enough to offset most of the vehicle#39;s shortcomings.

A third Discovery series was launched in 2005, but due to the bad quality reputation that the Discovery name had earned in America, the U.S. version was called LR3. With fully independent suspension new engines, and unibody construction, the LR3 is an entirely different animal. While it was not initially greeted with enthusiasm by fans of the classic Land Rover vehicles, the LR4/Discovery 3 has been widely praised by the automotive press and continues to this day as a principal offering of the Land Rover brand.
