Here is a brand new Lancia, and coming to the UK in September. The last we had new Lancias here was in 1994, so have been gone a time.

We should be pleased. the upcoming event isn’t what it seems. After would you, as a regular of the British car-buying public, a new Lancia? Thought not. The might be steeped in history, but there are few of us who appreciate that

For most people Lancia is a brand in Britain.

So the Ypsilon you see here, and the larger Delta arrives here at the same but is now two years old, might be the opportunity to relaunch this marque in the UK and take advantage of current appetite for premium in a compact package. Such a was indeed poised for implementation after the Delta’s launch, but the fiscal crisis came and the fizzled out.

Then unexpected happened. Chrysler, the of the Big Three US car corporations, ran right out of Fiat, already looking to the US market with Alfa and the Fiat 500, came to the and now effectively controls Chrysler.

It has paid back the US government and is on track to gain a majority

So here’s the new plan. Chrysler has a in Europe with two large the Voyager MPV and the 300C, a square-cut It has no compact cars, and hasn’t had the demise of the retro-pastiche PT Cruiser and the Neon.

Today’s Chrysler tend, strangely, to do better in drive markets, the US and Canada of course.

So, outside North the Lancia and Chrysler ranges are to be with the badge on the grille upon the steering wheel’s on left or right. Our new Ypsilon, will be a Chrysler, mainland will be a Lancia, and two identical will now be marketed as though from entirely different

Does it matter? One feels it but the truth is that most take a shallower view. If a car good, suggests an association a lush mode of life, and has an and BlueTooth connection, then probably enough.

So, realistically, we judge our Chrysler Ypsilon not on the it wears, nor on the inconvenient truth it’s conceived in Italy, in Poland, and bears an expedient brand name, but on whether a desirable object in itself.

The Ypsilon is a neat-looking little obviously a visual evolution of the model and of other Lancias, and in combining five doors upmarket intent. The rear handles are concealed to create a three-door look, and two-tone finishes and various leather trims are offered.

Under its lies the structure and mechanical of a current Fiat 500 with an 90mm inserted in the wheelbase, in a roomier rear cabin but no in headroom. The engine range, is that of the 500 apart from the 1.4-litre units.

The most engine, as with the Fiat, is the two-cylinder, 875cc, turbocharged which has recently won the prestigious Engine of the Year award. It is a punchy, enthusiastic engine, and very economical if its driver the temptation to use that enthusiasm all the

In other respects, too, the feels like a bigger, more grown-up 500, prices ranging from to £16,000. Its premiumness doesn’t run however, with much plastic in the cabin. In that at least, the Ypsilon is true to its Chrysler name so perhaps more authentic than I thought.

That doesn’t it from being a likeable car, but I’m glad not the one who has to devise the marketing campaign.

Lancia Ypsilon

The Rivals

Audi A1 1.2 SE: £13,420 – 118g/km

Reproduces Audi qualities in miniature. It’s a Polo with more sparkle.

Fiat 500 TwinAir £12,265 – 85bhp, 95g/km

the same as Ypsilon but full of authenticity. Cheekier character Ypsilon, more fun.

One: from £13,400 – 127g/km

Original premium car, here in relatively guise but still more than rivals. Fun to drive, of character, huge following.
