is it?

The third generation Lancia is a rare and important car. hasn’t been an all-new since 2004, and this one lead a renewed assault the firm on Britain and much of the of Europe. It’s distinctive and with several engines elsewhere in the Fiat group, and clever technology too.

But it’s still not the car we were for.

Come to this car with no of the last range of dull, Lancias that were in the UK and the Delta will surprise you elegant looks and unusual

It’s longer than a Focus but shorter than a

Underneath the Delta, the Fiat floorpan has been stretched to another 100mm between the and rear wheels, and with 100mm in the rear overhang. rear seats that fore and aft by around 150mm, gives the new Delta a cabin as much rear legroom, or as boot space, as the most cars from the class

What’s it like?

If you remember far-off history of mechanical you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the new Three of the engines from new Delta’s range of six are brand among them the twin-turbocharged 190bhp diesel we’re here.

But the car disappoints in exactly the we’ve been lead to greatness by Lancia’s own pre-launch If the new Lancia is all about comfort, luxury and refinement – if it is indeed answer to Lexus’ – you wouldn’t it from the Delta’s driver’s

Moreover, the Delta’s driving is poor – and this is a fundamental for what’s supposed to be an upmarket The position of the pedals and steering were skewed to the left in the we tested, and the squab of the front was too short for good leg support.

refinement levels are only our 1.9-litre diesel was a strong but no more quiet than the average.

And perhaps most is the way this car rides; on the standard and dampers it affords occupants comfort from ruts and than many superminis, and the secondary ride improves the addition of the adaptive dampers, the never as cosseting as it should be.

So, should I buy one?

With the Romeo brand to carry its ambitions, the Fiat Group has Lancia in a unique mould; of a maker of stylish, advanced, and spacious mainstream cars. the Delta though, it has delivered a car only half of those and plenty of faults besides.

We’ve already been 14 years for Lancia to return to the UK, and have to wait longer, July 2009, for this to touch down in the UK. But even on this evidence, the wait for a good Lancia will go on for longer.
