Kia Shuma

in general

Advantages: Lots! (see review)

Disadvantages: Very few! (see review)

I have just returned from the most helpful and efficient car dealer I have ever experienced and am currently awaiting Saturday morning when I go and collect my brand new Y registration Kia Shuma.

Until last Saturday I had only just heard of this car manufacturer (I actually learnt to drive in a Kia Pride about 10 years ago), never mind the actual model, and within a week a brand shiny new one will be sitting on my driveway.

There is a little background to this story, so if you are sitting carefully, then I#39;ll begin.

For the last four years, we have undertaken the Ford Options scheme, which, 4 years ago seemed like a good idea at the time, but we now unfortunately regret. Four years ago, we decided to put a considerable sum of money down on a Ford Fiesta Flight (brand new) and enter into a two-year options deal. We would then pay Ј180 a month, and at the end of the two years, have the option to buy it or exchange it for a new Fiesta.

2 years later, we chose the latter option, paid a nominal administration fee and drove off in a new Fiesta. However, this model was a lower specification and we had to pay Ј210 a month. A couple of weeks ago, as our contract renewal date was due, we decided to pop into the Ford garage to discuss further options.

We now have a child and really want a bigger car, we had considered the Focus. The guy at the Ford showroom discussed a similar Options package, note that the Options can now only be taken over 3 years, not 2, which was very disappointing. The final nail in the coffin was that it would now cost us Ј270 a month, which we can ill afford.

He then continued to try and fob us off with a Fiesta, stating that the repayments would be much less. We went round and round in circles for about 2 hours and left, he promised he would find us something and contact us.

However, we were rather put out by the fact that we have been loyal to Ford f

or 4 years and paid over Ј12,000 in 4 years, and got absolutely nothing to show for it, so we decided to spread our wings and look elsewhere at the competition. The only problem being, if we give our Fiesta back, how would we find a deposit for a new car?

I contacted my faithful Dad (always good for a shoulder to cry on!!) and as my Mum has had a Kia Pride from new a year ago, with no problems, he suggested trying out the Shuma. The Kia dealers currently have these models on a special offer price, not only are they at Ј10,500, you only have to put Ј99 deposit down on a brand new model.

This seemed too good to be true, but as the salesman kept on, I realised that (unlike with Ford), there are absolutely no hidden costs (administration fees or otherwise). We then discussed finance packages, and currently Kia are offering 0% finance, so therefore it works out at Ј165 a month over 5 years. This on a brand new hatchback family car, bigger than a Ford Mondeo, makes buying a large family car much more affordable.

Also, not just that, but the car will actually be mine at the end of the day and I won#39;t actually owe a penny to Kia (unlike Ford). I can then part-exchange it for a new one, or even terminate the contract at any time and exchange it for a newer one.

All Kia cars (Shuma included) come with a 3 year or 60,000 mile warranty, 6 year anti-perforation warranty AND a 3 year Kia-Assist roadside assist package (including European cover). Therefore, this saves me 3 year#39;s worth of Ј85 Ford RAC cover = Ј255. Added to the fact that I shall be paying over Ј100 less a month than I would be on a Ford Focus, I just can#39;t believe the excellent deal.

As for the actual car itself, here are a few details:

The Shuma I#39;ve gone for is a 1.6 SX (this used to be a 1.5 engine, but is now a re-designed Mazda 1.6L). It has body coloured bumpers, door handles, mirrors (with metallic Steel Blue paint), 6 speaker stereo, sunroof,

front rear electric windows, power steering, central locking, and a zillion other gadgets (from something so simple as an interior boot light – not compulsory on a Fiesta!!).

Kia Shuma

The dimensions make the car bigger all round than a Ford Mondeo, the dimensions being:

Overall length: 4,475mm

Overall width: 1,711mm

Overall height: 1,413mm

Wheelbase: 2,560mm

Unfortunately, with a CO2 emmission of 190 g/km this puts us in the highest category for Road Tax, (Mr. Chancellor rubs his hands with glee.)

However, for a much bigger and more powerful car, the insurance is only Ј12 a month more expensive, which I reckon is very good.

Any way, I shall update this review after a couple of weeks after Saturday (my eagerly-awaited collection date) and let dooyooer#39;s know of it#39;s performance.

If my review has swayed you in any way, to find out more or to book a test drive, surf on to or call 0800 775 777.
