Isuzu is set to build on its range with a diesel-powered, seven-seat off-road wagon loaded with 14 cupholders.

Based on the strong-selling D-Max ute . the MU-X is pitched as a rugged wagon capable of tackling the Dakar rally on the way to school.

The MU-X range shares its 3.0-litre, 130kW and 380Nm four-cylinder turbo diesel motor with the D-Max, delivering 8.2L/100km economy in two-wheel drive wagon models and using 8.4L/100km in four-wheel-drive trim.

Isuzu says its off-road credentials are helped by its 230mm ground clearance and steel skid plates protecting vital parts such as the sump and transfer case.

Every model in the range has a 3000kg tow rating thanks to the diesel engine and weights that vary between models from 1900kg to 2060kg.

The car is available with a choice of five-speed manual or automatic transmissions, with auto models costing an additional $2200.

The entry-level MU-X models are two-wheel-drive and come with a five-speed automatic transmission only, with four-wheel drive costing an extra $7300.

The $40,500 4X2 LS-M has 16-inch alloy wheels, colour coded mirrors and a grey grille that sets it apart in the range. Fog lights, 17-inch alloys, and chrome trim for the grille and mirrors feature on the $42,000 4X2 LS-U.

Unlike Isuzu#8217;s two-wheel-drive models, the similarly-specced LS-M and LS-U four-wheel-drive variants are available with a choice of five-speed manual or automatic transmissions. #160;#160;

All models in the MU-X range are fitted with front, side and full-length curtain airbags and parking sensors, but only the top-spec, $53,500 4X4 LS-T auto has a reversing camera.

The LS-T also features leather trim, climate control, satellite navigation and a roof-mounted DVD entertainment system, and can only be had with four-wheel-drive and an automatic transmission.

There are few cars on the market that combine seven-seats with true off-road ability. Ford is working on a wagon variant for its Ranger ute . but for now Holden#8217;s Colorado 7 and Mitsubishi’s Challenger are the closest matches.

The cheapest two-wheel-drive MU-X undercuts the entry-level Colorado 7 LT by $6490, but compared like-for-like, the automatic 4X4 MU-X LS-M is just $810 cheaper than the Colorado 7 LT.

Isuzu backs the MU-X with a five year, 130,000 kilometre warranty with five years of roadside assistance.
