Chrysler Grand Voyager

History

The American automaker Chrysler introduced the world’s first minivans in 1983 for the 1984 model year. The Dodge version was called the Caravan, and the Plymouth version was christened the Voyager. The minivan concept was readily embraced and sold nearly 210,000 units that year. In 1985 the minivan made Car and Driver Magazine’s Ten Best list.

The original Voyager had a wheel base, or distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels, of 112 inches. The longer wheel-based Grand Voyager was introduced in 1987, which provided consumers with greater stability and more interior room. The second-generation Voyager was introduced in 1991; the third-generation Voyager was introduced in 1999. The demise of the Plymouth brand was announced in 1999, and the Voyager name was passed on to the Chrysler brand.

The fourth-generation Chrysler Voyager was renamed the Town Country in 2004.

Function

The Voyager minivan served as a cross between a station wagon and a full-size van. The Voyager was designed to seat between five and eight passengers comfortably, depending upon seat configuration, in addition to providing significant cargo room.

Features

The Voyager minivan had an innovative sliding side door, removable back seats and flush-mounted windows that reduced drag and wind noise. The Voyager was designed around Chrysler’s existing K platform, so it was not much larger on the outside than the Plymouth Reliant. The van was easy to park in a home garage, was wide enough to haul a standard sheet of plywood, offered better fuel efficiency than a Gran Fury and provided excellent headroom for all passengers.
