Hyundai used to be one of the up and coming manufacturers desperately trying to break into the established European markets. After years in the wilderness of mediocrity, with cars such as the Pony and Accent, the market was stunned by the release of the i30.

At a stroke Hyundai had closed the gap to the class leaders, in the process leaving the majority of the traditional contenders in its wake and no doubt prompting a number of heated meetings at the headquarters of every manufacturer in Europe. That breakthrough model has been followed up with cars such as the i10 as Hyundai looks to build on the foot hold and now the i30 itself has been revised before a new model arrives in 2012.

What are its rivals?

This sector is particularly hard fought and recent additions to the market have made it even tougher. As ever, the ubiquitous Ford Focus remains a tough act to beat and the fact that the VW Golf and Alfa Giulietta have raised their games so significantly means that there are two or three top guns in this sector now. Those may be out of sight of the i30, in terms of cost as much as talent, but the i30 is as strong as the majority of the other contenders.

It#39;s as competitive as ever, and the consumer is truly benefitting as a result.

How does it drive?

Nicely. Controls are smooth with well-judged weighting and operated from an excellent driving position. On the move the chassis displays a good level of composure with a finely judged ride quality.

This is combined with decent body control too and as a consequence the handling is impressive.

Hyundai#39;s latest 1.6-litre petrol unit is a good engine that stands up to favourable comparison to the majority of rivals#39; offerings. It revs cleanly and eagerly and the willingness at the top end is accompanied by a pleasing engine note and complemented well by a strong bottom end with plenty of torque.

What#39;s impressive?

The i30 is a good all-rounder and this latest update addresses weaknesses such as the engine department particularly well. Given that this is an interim update rather than a full scale launch of a new model opportunities for total change are limited, but what Hyundai has done is apply effort where it was needed to further strengthen the i30#39;s overall game.

Hyundai#39;s continued commitment to value and the ownership experience is actually dragging the rest of the market with it as other manufacturers scrabble to match the five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and indeed the build quality and engineering required to give a manufacturer the confidence to offer such a guarantee in the first place.

What#39;s not?

The game has moved on since Hyundai originally launched the i30 and such is the rate of progress that there are certain elements that need a large amount of effort to bring up to par. Fortunately, for the most part, these are nice to have items such as the latest satnav technology or that final degree of polish and subtlety to the interior#39;s layout and finish.

Should I buy one?

In a word, yes. There is precious little that the i30 wants for. It may not scale the heights of the best in class in terms of outright talent, but value for money and worry free ownership are powerful weapons and its talents are sufficient to stand comparison with the best, if not beat them. This latest version isn#39;t as much of an epiphany as the first i30 was, but that#39;s more a reflection of the shock of that car than the lack of ability of this one.

The updated i30 represents a small but worthwhile step forward with some appreciable benefits and improvements. As such, it#39;s easy to recommend and very few buyers would be disappointed.
