Hyundai i10 Review

The I10 was introduced into the market by auto maker Hyundai Motor Company in 2007. The sub compact 5 door hatchback replaced it’s predecessor the Atos in some Countries. The I10 is manufactured in India at Hyundai’s Chennai factory.

The Hyundai I10 also shares its platform with the current Kia Picanto.

Since its introduction the I10 has been very popular, as this little car has many features that mostly cars in the larger segments have. In the South African market the top of the range Hyundai I10 comes with the latest engine technology, safety features like ABS and EBD as well as dual air bags. The standard equipment includes an audio system that supports iPod and Auxiliary connectivity and for a little extra you can also get the integrated Bluetooth hands free.

The I10 also has standard equipment expected to be found in modern cars like power steering, air conditioning and remote central locking.

In 2011 the I10 was face lifted to align with Hyundai’s new design philosophy. The exterior upgrades includes a larger radiator grill, that gives the I10 a more aggressive look over the pre-facelift I10. The front end also has a refreshed headlight cluster as well as fog lamps on the 1.25.

The 2011 I10 also sports body coloured door handles and inserts with new indicators integrated into the side mirrors. The rear of the I10 has also been upgraded with a refreshed tail light cluster, it also has stylish reflectors and colour coded inserts. The overall look is fresh and modern and will appeal to a wide range of buyers.

The current range available in South Africa comes with two engine variants, the 1.1 iRDE engine which is an 8 valve single overhead cam engine with fuel injection and outputs 50 kw at 5500 rpm and 99 nm at 4500 rpm. The 1.25 Kappa-2 engine is a 16 valve double overhead cam engine with the added benefit of (VTVT) variable timing and valve train, which improves low end response and fuel efficiency. The power figures for the 1.25 is 64 kw’s at 6000 rpm and 119 nm at 4000 rpm.

Two types of gearboxes are available with the Hyundai I10, a 5 speed manual as well as a 5 speed automatic.

Some of the standard features worth mentioning includes:

ABS and EBD.

Dual Air bags and side impact protection.

Power Steering.

Air Conditioning.

Multifunction steering wheel, with controls for the audio system.

Audio system that includes CD/MP3/IPOD/Auxiliary support.

Driving the Hyundai I10

The I10 is a great little car to drive, with comfortable seats and lots of leg room. Overall visibility is very good. The multifunction steering is easy to use and connecting your phone to the Bluetooth is a breeze.

Although the I10 is a small car with a small engine its performance is surprisingly lively and even highway driving is comfortable. The clutch and gearbox actions are soft and smooth and a pleasure to use. The Hyundai I10‘s handling and breaking is also very good and you always feel save and in control.

With a boot capacity of 225 litres the I10 have enough boot space to accommodate your weekly groceries or your luggage for a weekend away.

The Hyundai I10 comes with a standard 5 year / 100 000 km warranty which includes corrosion as well as a 5 year /100 000 km road side assistance for when something goes wrong.

Why buy the Hyundai I10?

As I personally drive an I10, I would definitely recommend it. The Hyundai I10 offers great value for money, it looks good, drives like a dream and is also very fuel efficient. Because the I10 is very popular and demand for the I10 is always high, the resale value is also very good.

My score for the Hyundai I10 is 8/10.
