Excel Coupe

Like all Excels, whether two or four-door, the coupe featured a 1.5-liter in-line four-cylinder engine, mated to the standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission. This engine, unchanged throughout the life cycle of the model, produced 91 horsepower at 5,500 rpm — max torque came reasonably early, at 3,000 rpm, and it was rated at 91 foot-pounds.

While such output figures would be insufficient for today’s larger vehicles, the Excel coupe of the early 90s weighed less than 2,200 pounds. Classified a subcompact, it was a small car across all dimensions, with a length of 161.4 inches and width of 63.3 inches. The coupe version of the Excel was available in two trim levels: Base and the slightly upgraded GS with better interior trim.

The GS featured a tachometer, remote trunk release, rear window wiper, AM/FM/Cassette audio system and rear spoiler, which were either optional or unavailable on the base model.

Excel Sedan

The sedan featured the same 1.5-liter engine, with identical output figures. The sedan was longer, at 168.3 inches and weighed slightly more at 2,224 lbs. The width of the coupe and sedan were identical, unlike modern cars whose sedan versions tend to be a little wider.

The sedan offered seating for five, with a three-passenger bench seat in the back. Despite this small difference in weight, both the coupe and sedan were rated 24-mpg city and 33-mpg highway. The combined fuel economy of 27 mpg and fuel tank capacity of 11.9 gallons gave either version a range of 321 miles.

Luxury features such as remote trunk release, intermittent windshield wipers, AM/FM/Cassette audio, which were optional on the coupe, were standard in the four-door sedan. As in the coupe, the standard transmission was a five-speed manual, with four-speed automatic available as an option. All Excels came with cloth seats only.
