The Hyundai Atos has earned itself several names in several markets. In the United Kingdom, it is known as the Hyundai Amica, while in India and Parkistan it is known as Hyndai Santro Xing, while in Mexico, it has earned the name Dodge Atos. The Indonesians and South Koreans opt to call it the Kia Visto, while the Malaysians call it the Inokom Atos.

The Hyundai Atos, as it is commonly known has carved a market niche as a city car and is produced by Hyundai. The premiere Atos was introduced in 1997. In 1999, it was joined by the less controversially styled Atos Prime.

It uses the G4HC Epsilon straight-4 engine.

While most markets have phased out this model in favour of the new Hyundai i10, it is still being manufactured in India, where it is marketed below the i10. It was rebranded and rebadged to use the brand name Atoz or AtoZ in some markets; the United Kingdom included.

The Hyundai Santro is a rebadged version of the city car Hyundai Atos sold in some Asian markets.

In India Hyundai the Atos entered the Indian market through the Santro brand name and at that time the main rival was the popular Maruti Suzuki Zen. Hyundai then signed a contract with Shahrukh Khan, a Bollywood actor to endorse the Santro. While the radical styling was not accepted by all, that did not stop the car from being an instant hit.

It is still undergoing a number of improvements and face lifts to suit the Indian customers. The main rival of Santro in the current market is Suzuki Wagon R and Maruti Zen Estilo.

In 2003, older models were replaced by the second generation Atos Prime as the Santro Xing, which is also very popular in India. In Pakistan the Santro was launched in 2000. Pakistan is the only country where the first generation Atos continued to be sold, with the car continuing to receive upgrades.

In Malaysia, Hyundai Atos is locally assembled by Inokom carrying the badge Inokom Atos. The Inokom Atos Prima was later introduced in 2006 which has the new Atos Prime front while maintaining the original Atos rear.

The Hyndai Atos is a compact, “smallish” vehicle in stature and measures 3495 mm in length, 1495 mm in width and 1590mm in height. Supporting the compact vehicle to stay on the rail is a wheelbase of 2380mm. It has an unladen weight of 867kg.

For those in love with the gusto of speed, you won’t be too disappointed by the Atos. If you dare take the Atos out of the city; the Atos takes to the 96km/r mark in a fair 14.6 seconds and registers a maximum top speed of 160km. This is aided by the multi-point fuel injection system which allows a smooth flow of the engine in and around the city.

It comes on a 5-speed manual engine, with 12 valves, generating a power of 40kW and a maximum torque of 82 Nm. When it comes to fuel economy, critics have nothing to say, because that is one of the strength of the Atos. Taking only 6.4 liters to transcend 100km is very favorable.

Another majestic feature of the Atos is its very low carbon emission, which suites very well its city status. It emits 151g of carbon/ km.

The first generation Atos was introduced in 1997. It is fitted with a 1 litre engine and registers a top speed of 145 km/h. It received a facelift in 2000, resulting in the emergence of the second generation, which ran from 2000 to 2003, known as the Atos Prime.

The current (2011) model, the Atos EV, was unveiled at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show as an electric vehicle based on the Atos. The Atos EV weights 1,173 kg and can reach a top speed of 130 km/h.

As sure as it is a compact car, it has received an award as the best compact car in Initial Quality 2004, in Malaysia Initial Quality Study. That says much about the Hyundai Atos, the best among many compact city vehicles, economical and handy.
