German Car Day Preview: 1974 Audi 100 Coupe S

Coming up this weekend is the Larz Anderson Auto Museum#8217;s German Car Day, one of more than two dozen lawn events that the Boston area museum holds each summer. One of its top three events, German Car Day attracts cars and car fans from all over New England, and every year the selection of cars always surprises even those who go to almost every event every year. And last year was no exception, with big crowds and exceptional cars on the field itself.

And last year one of those cars was this wonderful 1974 Audi 100 Coupe S. Owned by Rob Petschke, this RHD Audi 100 was originally supplied to South Africa, whose climate we have to thank for its great preservation. This is a two owner car with just a little over 85,000 kilometers on the clock, but looking at it up close I wouldn#8217;t have even given it that much.

This 100 Coupe was in stunning condition, and appeared in the pages of Hemmings Sports Exotic Car just a few months ago. Let#8217;s take a closer look at this Audi.

The C1 generation Audi 100 premiered in 1968, and represented the first major model of Audi#8217;s comeback. It#8217;s easy to forget now, but Audi as we know it today wasn#8217;t really with us for a good chuck of the second half of the 20th century. Volkswagen#8217;s was only a few years into its effort to bring back the Audi brand, and at this stage it was still an experiment.

The C1 generation Audis were a range of two-door and four-door sedans that was styled rather conservatively, with the rakish 100 Coupe S serving as the sports car of the lineup.

This 1974 example is one of just 30,787 built between 1969 and 1976, and spent almost its entire life in South Africa. If you don#8217;t recall the last time you#8217;ve seen one in the US, that may be because there are only 5 of these left on our shores. But that doesn#8217;t mean they#8217;re plentiful elsewhere, because only about 600 Coupes are thought to remain. So it#8217;s fortunate that the US managed to gain just one of these in 2009, and I hope it remains here.

And yes, this is the only RHD version of the Coupe on our shores. And Larz Anderson#8217;s German Car day is one of only a handful of shows where you can see rare cars like this. Well, that and Lime Rock, where this example was last seen.

This year#8217;s German Car Day will take place on Sunday, June 16th, at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum located in Brookline, Massachusetts. The museum is just a few minutes southwest of Boston. Be there, or be trapezoidal.
