HUMMER’s H3 Set for Release in Second Quarter 2005

10/27/04: HUMMER introduced its new mid-size SUV today, saying that the 2006 HUMMER H3 is scheduled for release sometime during the second quarter of 2005.

Highlights of the H3 HUMMER

Powered by a Vortec 3.5L inline five-cylinder engine that delivers 220 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 225 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm.

Projected to get up to 20 miles per gallon of gas.

The first HUMMER to offer the choice of a manual or an automatic transmission.

Electronically controlled four-wheel-drive with a fully locking rear differential, traction control, underbody shielding and GM’s StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system.

The H3 can ford 16 inches of water at 20 mph or 24-inch streams at 5 mph pace. HUMMER says it can climb 16-inch vertical steps and rocks.

Your choice of two tire packages, a Goodyear 32-inch all-terrain tire or Bridgestone 33-inch.

H3 Interior Features (some optional)

Heated leather seats

Front bucket seats and 60/40 split rear seats

Electric sliding sunroof

DVD-based navigation radio

Four audio systems, all compatible with GM’s OnStar system and optional XM Satellite Radio

Power windows and door locks with lockout protection

Electric rear window defogger

Outside power-adjustable manually folding rearview mirrors

Self-dimming rearview mirror with compass and outside temperature indicator

Three 12-volt, covered auxiliary power outlets (two in front, one in the cargo area).

H3’s 4-Wheel Drive System

New Borg-Warner two-speed electrically controlled full-time four-wheel-drive system with a 2.64:1 ratio low-range gear reduction. An optional version provides a 4.03:1 ratio for ultimate obstacle-climbing control.

Both versions provide the choice of multiple operating modes for every type of driving need.

More Offroad Capabilies

37-ft. turning circle

9.1-inch ground clearance

Maximum breakover angle of 25 degrees (with 33-inch tires)

Maximum approach angle of 40 degrees

Maximum departure angle of 37 degrees

See the H3 angle diagram

The combination of angles and gearing means that there aren’t many places the H3 won’t go.

Frame Suspension

The H3 has a three-piece, modular, boxed ladder-type frame to enhance strength and stiffness.

At the front is a independent torsion bar suspension. The rear also has independent suspension, using semi-elliptical leaf springs. HUMMER offers an optional Off-Road Adventure package for more extreme offroad needs.

The H3 comes standard with skid plates to protect the steering links, the oil pan, the transfer case and the fuel tank. Chassis-bolted rocker panel protectors are optional.

H3 Steering

The H3 uses rack and pinion steering with a 17:1 ratio.

ABS Traction Control Braking

The H3 features an anti-lock braking system that uses Dynamic Rear Proportioning to help control rear braking in a panic stop situation.

The H3’s traction control system works in conjunction with the engine controls and brake system to provide maximum traction with minimum wheel spin, even in the worst of conditions.

Exterior Highlights

Rear swing gate with fixed glass, standard rear wiper and defogger

A HUMMER first, a swing gate-mounted spare to enhance interior cargo space

Stamped-steel front and rear bumper bars

Standard front tow hooks

Welded-on rear bumper recovery hook

Other Safety Features

Reinforced passenger compartment safety cage

Fully welded, ladder-type frame to enhance crash performance as well as everyday strength and offroad capabilities

While it might not have the clout of its bigger brothers, the H3 lets you drive a HUMMER that you can maneuver in heavy traffic, that’s easier on your billfold at the gas pumps, but still has the promise of strong offroad capabilities.
