O’Brien takes the top Forest award

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

TWO rounds of next season’s Irish Forest Rally Championship will take place in the forests of county Cork as the series organisers confirmed the continuation of title sponsor, Valvoline.

The announcement was made at the awards ceremony at the Clonmel Park Hotel, Clonmel on Saturday night where Churchtown native and Londoner Michael O’Brien took the main award.

Dromtarriffe co-driver, James O’Brien was the top co-driver while Ovens driver Owen Murphy finished second overall.

The seven round 2014 season has a number of changes to its usual format and while the Sean Conlon Memorial Forest Rally returns as the opening round, the event is switching location.

Having been based in Mitchelstown for several years, the rally is moving to Clonmel and the forest complex on the outskirts of the south Tipperary town. That event will have a mini stage (2 x 2) format.

The Moonraker Rally, organised by the Munster Car Club, is also moving its location.

For the last few years, it’s been based at Lismore, however, next season’s rally will be based in Ballyvourney. The series will also feature the Wicklow Forest Rally, which will be organised by the Aer Lingus Motor Club.

The full championship is as follows: 1. Sean Conlon Memorial Rally, Clonmel. (February 2); 2. Willie Loughman Rally, Waterford. (March 20); 3. Munster Moonraker Rally, Ballyvourney. (April 13); 4. Wicklow Rally, Ashford. (May 17); 5. Jim Walsh Cork Forest Rally, Ballyhea. (August 24); 6. Bushwhacker Rally, Omagh. (September 27); 7. Glens Forest Rally, Antrim. (November 8).

Competitors can compete in all seven rounds with the best five rounds to count.

Meanwhile, Cork competitors were out of luck in the Midland Navigation Trial, round three of the National Navigation Trial Championship, that was won by the Leitrim/Longford combination of Enda McLoughlin/Nigel McCloughry (Toyota Starlet). Along with the Subaru duo of Longford’s Pakie Duffy and Monaghan’s Evin Hughes, they finished without incurring any penalties, McLoughlin/McCloughry took victory on a tie-break. All but one of the thirty crews finished the event.

Opening round victors, Bandon’s David Beamish and Togher’s Muireann Hayes had to skip four time points and finished on a total of 121 penalty points. Daire Hayes competing in the Expert class with Stephen Wright was eight overall with seven penalty points.
