A manhunt was under way last night after a man was fatally shot at a motorcycle gang’s headquarters.

The 39-year-old Blenheim victim, whose name is yet to be released, was one of three people to violently die around the country in a horror 15-hour spell.

6pm Friday: Tauranga man Shane Donald Kurth, 33, dies of knife wounds in his suburban Tauranga home.

9am Saturday: A 39-year-old man is shot at a Blenheim gang headquarters. He dies later in the day at Wairau Hospital.

While police in Tauranga and Opotiki say they are no longer seeking suspects, extra officers were called in from Nelson last night to boost Blenheim staff hunting for the offender responsible for the shooting at the Lone Legions gang headquarters.

Police have commenced a homicide investigation and further staff have been called in from Nelson to assist, Inspector Steve Caldwell said.

Detective Sergeant John Hamilton said the shooting happened during a fight between Lone Legions gang members and another group of men.

There’s been some sort of altercation between visitors and people inside the headquarters. A firearm has been used and one man has been shot, he said.

Police were last night appealing to the public for sightings of a white 1989 Mitsubishi Galant hatchback with the registration number of OT1706.

Members of the public are warned not to approach the vehicle but to call police immediately, Caldwell said.

The weekend took another deadly turn when Tauranga police investigating reports of a stabbing found Kurth’s body at his home in the suburb of Judea.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said a 37-year-old man had been charged with Kurth’s murder. He was to appear tomorrow at Tauranga district court. Police will allege he argued with Kurth before the alleged incident.

Turner said police were appealing to residents in the Waihi Road area to check their properties for discarded clothing and knives.

Anyone who finds such items on their property should not touch them but contact the Tauranga police immediately, he said.

Yesterday began badly when police in Opotiki called out to a report of gunshots, found a 35-year-old man dead on a farm on the edge of the seaside township at 7am.

The incident occurred at a rural address approximately 40km southeast of the Opotiki township, Inspector Rob Jones said.

Initial inquiries indicate the deceased died from a gunshot wound.

Jones said a man was found at the scene about 10.30am.

No charges have yet been laid but a 43-year-old man from the area is helping police with their inquiries, Jones said. At this stage police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the shooting.

He said the victim would be not be named until next of kin had been notified.
