Fuel Pump Replacement Procedure

Many repairs on the Daewoo Nubira are rendered far more inconvenient than they need to be by seemingly thoughtless placement of components. The fuel pump is perhaps the exception. On most vehicles replacing the fuel pump entails unhanging the gas tank; not so for the Nubira, which has an access hole located under the rear seat.

Before you begin the repair, order a new o-ring from Daewoo. a new fuel filter, and a fuel pump. The OEM pump is available through the dealerships and company website, and many import parts vendors carry a very expensive Bosch pump. Avoid these and look for the less expensive Airtex. Several Internet vendors carry it; at the time I performed the repair, RockAuto offered the best price.

It pays to be sure of the trouble diagnosis before paying over a hundred dollars for the part, too. Disconnect the return hose at the fuel pump (or at the fuel rail), place a container to catch any fuel that may leak out, and turn the ignition key to on. If fuel comes out of the fuel return line or the return side of the fuel rail, chances are high that the fuel pressure regulator, and not the fuel pump, is the problem.

If fuel is leaking back through the fuel pump inlet, replace the pump.

Perform the repair as follows:

Remove the fuel pump fuse at the fusebox (or disconnect the negative battery cable.)

Depressurize the fuel system; most fuel pressure gauges feature a button-actuated valve to facilitate this.

Using a siphon, drain the fuel into a suitable container. This is optional, but will make the job much more pleasant.

Remove the rear seat cushion by pulling up and backwards.

Remove the access hole cover.

Disconnect the two electrical connectors and two fuel hoses from the fuel pump. Try not to break the fuel line retaining clips, as new pumps don’t always come with them in place. If you do break them, purchase new ones at your local auto parts store before proceeding.

Using a rubber mallet and a punch or screwdriver, remove the fuel pump retaining ring by tapping it counterclockwise. A squirt of PB Blaster or similar penetrating lubricant makes this much easier.

Remove the fuel pump assembly and set aside. Take care to not dribble fuel on the undercoating material surrounding the access hole.

Inspect the gas tank. If it is noticeably dirty or rusty, unhang it, clean it, and seal it using one of the fuel tank sealing resin kits available at many auto parts stores.

Put the new o-ring into place.

If an intake strainer or prefilter is available for your fuel pump–there is none for the Airtex–affix the strainer to the new pump.

Seat the new pump in the fuel tank, on top of the o-ring. Tuck the fuel hoses aside, as they get in the way.

Replace the retaining ring, by tapping it clockwise with a rubber mallet and screwdriver or punch.

Re-attach the electrical connectors and fuel lines to the fuel pump assembly.

Remove the old fuel filter in the engine compartment, and replace it with a new one.

Go wash your hands, then put the access hole cover and rear seat back into place.

Plug the fuel pump fuse back in to its socket in the fuse box, and close up the fuse box.

Pour the gasoline back into the fuel tank.

Attach a fuel pressure gauge to the service port on the rail. Turn the ignition switch to on; if everything has gone well, the fuel pressure should be holding between 40 and 45 psi.
