Here is a concours, rotisserie-restored 1955 MG “TF” 1500 for your consideration. This is an original, numbers matching roadster; not a kit car by any means. There were only 3,400 “TF” 1500’s produced in 1955 and this is number 2570, being of the highest restored quality you will find anywhere.

She truly is pristine down to every nut and bolt; the Autumn Red paint has also been immaculately refinished.

Following WWII, the first British sports car to capture American hearts was the MG TC. This popularity would prompt MG to build a model designed specifically for the US in 1949: the MG TD was instantly a success. It was not long; however, before MG dreamed of competing with the new Triumph TR2 or Austin-Healey 100, hence the TF was born and unveiled in 1953.

When introduced, the MG TF was powered by the same XPAG 1250 cc engine that had driven the TD. A mere 3hp increase brought little improvement in performance, although 0-60mph times improved by nearly five seconds to 18.9 (which at the time was still quite slow). Salvation would come within a year, in the form of an additional 250 cubic centimeters.

The MG TF 1500 was fitted with a new XPEG engine based on the powerplant fitted in EX179, the MG that ran a record-breaking 120mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the hands of George Eyston and Ken Miles. No doubt, the publicity helped MG TF sales and, with the exception of 1500 badges replacing the 1250, the old and new MG TFs were externally identical.

While most new cars had abandoned a wooden body tub, the TF had continued the tradition. The side curtains, separate top and top bows had been improved over the TD and were stored behind the new bucket-style seats. The American press welcomed the MG TF. Road Track (Dec.

1954) stated, “After last year’s test we asked if the TF was really that good. It is, and more. Even though the MG is the lowest priced sports car on the market, it is the accepted standard of comparison.”

The current owner of the flawless example offered here is the 4th registered owner who bought the car in 2009 from a friend who acquired it in 1987. At that time, the pistons, crank and valves had already been replaced. The comprehensive restoration started in late 2009 and was finished in the summer of 2010. All of the sheet metal is original except for the ends of the cowl.

The bumpers and grill are re-chromed originals. The frame and all suspension units were scrubbed down and power coated, cleaner than your kitchen table.

The 63hp 1500cc inline 4-cylinder engine was overhauled with a new water pump, all new gaskets, a new timing chain, cam shaft bearings and new mounts. The 4-speed manual transmission received new bearings, seals, and mounts. New u-joints were given to the driveshaft. The rear end received new bearings and seals, and the gearing was updated to 4.55:1. It has new wheel cylinders, new brakes, new drums, new brake and fuel lines, new wheel bearings and completely new wiring.

All of the gauges have been rebuilt and the interior is completely new. Every item that was replaced was purchased new from Moss Motors; no expense was spared.

There are only 94 miles recorded on the odometer since the restoration was completed, as it’s been treated like a first born child since being rebuilt. With its folding windscreen, square radiator, cut-down doors, slab gas tank and rear mounted spare, the MG TF embodies the essence of MG. Additional and much appreciated MG 1500 options on this example include chrome wire wheels and an MG insignia exhaust. This is without a doubt the finest MG we have ever had the pleasure of offering.

One could simply not duplicate the cost of the restoration at the price offered here. Full documentation is available upon request. This car offers a great investment opportunity as it will surely appreciate with time.

Ponder with poise and assurance.
