Description

The Alfa Romeo 75 is the last model built under independent ownership before they were acquired by Fiat. It also marked the end of rear wheel drive car the manufacturer. The 75 was introduced in May 1985 to replace the Giulietta and was named to celebrate Alfa#8217;s 75th year of production.

The body was styled in a striking wedge shape, tapering at the front with square headlights.

It has to be said that you don#8217;t often Alfa Romeo#8217;s of this vintage in good condition, so to find a low milage, low ownership car such as this is a rare opportunity!  The shell is superb, the shut lines are as even as they ever were and running your fingers around the arches all you can feel is metal.  Up on the ramp is a similar story.  The car still has its thin layer of factory under seal and is free from rust.

In 2012 the car has a major recommission by Veloces of London who repainted the car from front to rear as the Italian red paint had faded in the British sunshine! It is a good job and the car looks fantastic.

The car is fitted with a set of original equipment Valbrem 15 inch 5 spoke alloy wheels. These have an almost brand new set of Toyo tyres fitted. The front brakes had a complete overhaul in 2012 and the rears have just been completely stripped and rebuilt with new discs and pads to get the car in tip-top condition for sale.

The 2.0 litre Twin Spark engine is of particular interest as it deviated from what was becoming the norm in the industry of producing more power from a normally aspirated engine. All of the Alfa#8217;s competition used 16 valve technology to improve breathing in their performance engines. Ever the independent thinkers Alfa exploited their experience with twin spark technology, further enhanced by giving it their new engine a variable inlet camshaft controlled by the engine management system.

This brought power up to 148 bhp while improving torque and fuel economy as the engine was able to run a lot more cleanly than single plug designs.

The engines are well known for being the most reliable component in any Alfa Romeo and this car has a fantastic service history. Its regular maintenance shows through with the engine firing from cold easily and running very smoothly, it doesn#8217;t use or leak oil or water and is in good health. The Twin Spark has a lovely lively engine note, typical of Alfas of the period and enhanced ever so slightly with the new Sports Ansa box fitted to our car.

The 75 had a technical feature more usually associated with BMW having given the 75 almost perfect front to rear weight distribution. This was achieved by mounting the standard five-speed gearbox at the rear of the car, infront of the differential. The gearbox in this car changes ratios cleanly and the throw is short and precise.

The interior of the 75 also retained some very quirky Alfa Romeo features with the front electric window switches mounted in the roof, the radio mounted behind the gear lever and an oddly shaped hand brake. The seating position is very Italian in style with the pedals off set towards the centre of the car and the steering wheel set at a slight arm#8217;s stretch. However there is plenty of room for a six footer to drive it.

The interior of this car is in fantastic condition. It feels solid and is quiet and almost rattle free on the road!
