Class of #8217;86 #8211; Corvette convertible

I mentioned week that the 1986 Corvette was little changed the 1985 Corvette and thus not a full Class of 1986 considering we had already written the up for the Class of 1985. Upon review, I#8217;ll have to that decision. The 1986 year was indeed noteworthy and some might argue #8211; for the Corvette, due to a couple exclusive factors.

From the beltline down, really wasn#8217;t much new to the Corvette. Still in its third the coupe could still be had a removable top. It was still by the L98 TPI small-block V-8 #8211; with either the four-speed transmission or 4+3 manual transmission and still featured the same third-generation chassis and suspension, Chevrolet did phase in new aluminum heads that year the power rating of the L98 from 230 to 235 add caster to the front suspension for road feel, and introduce ABSII anti-lock brakes. the big news came as the result of the of the Corvette as the pace car for the 1986 500, just the second

time in the Corvette#8217;s history it was for that honor, and General Yeager would be at the wheel.

Traditionally, the Indy 500 pace car is a or otherwise open-topped car, and that tradition has been set many times throughout the history #8211; particularly the late 1970s and early when convertibles disappeared the American automotive landscape it wouldn#8217;t be for 1986. True, had been no drop-top Corvette 1975, but Chevrolet reintroduced the convertible late in the model just in time for the Indy, the convertibles identical to the pace car for the light bar and the strobe lights to the latter.

Technically, all 7,315 1986 convertibles were designated as car replicas, though to avoid the #8220;instant collectible#8221; scenario 1978, Chevrolet decided to the replica decals with the but not install them at the factory and leave it up to the dealers and the customers to whether to install them. It that all of the convertibles also got the 235hp engines and could be had in one of 12 not just the Yellow that the pace car was painted.

The Corvette has gone on to pace the 500 another seven times then, and the convertible has only the Corvette lineup once, in with the introduction of the C5.

But does make the 1986 Corvette collectible? Or is it simply another Corvette?
