A Activa is one of the best kept of the French automotive world. people try and avoid them they’re ‘unreliable’ which them nice and cheap for in the know! here are the facts if that’s what your

From my point of view, suspension (any form of setup) will always be to passive suspension for day to day use, it’s actively managing the not just reacting to bumps. are very strange to drive to with. you’re wafting softly along a fast and you approach a bend. You turn in at a speed, the car does not lean.

isn’t that strange in as many low and stiffly sprung will not lean. But the Activa a soft ride, without That’s the masterpiece.

If you hit a bump halfway round, the will absorb the impact nearly full suspension yet the car will not be leaning. I genuinely sorry for the front tyres!

impressive, as opposed to involving to Like all Xantia’s, theres little feedback between and car, so I wouldn’t describe it as a car. The suspension really do it’s thing, but it’s not a car, or even a hot hatch. I Citroen missed a trick it, they tried to market it as a suspension setup, in a road

They should have it for what it was and given it a bit more The UK versions didn’t get the 3.0 V6, as there have been issues getting the steering column to fit and if you these modifications the car has to undergo a new series of safety testing not finanically sensible for a car you probably sell many of in the UK anyway!

The suspension (and the whole car for matter) is actually reliable, and made. It can take a pounding, with age some cars are to have a failure around the tops that results in the piercing through the bonnet. across the whoel Xantia though, not just Activas.

not sure what causes it Xantia’s are extremely rust so I’d be surprised if it was that.

The is the same in principle as a Hydractively Xantia, with the Activa added in. It’s not a system you can remove and retrofit though.

Even the suspension’s ECU is calibrated to the

The only weak link in the system is the Active Rams, of there are two. one on the nearside and the other on the offside rear, in place of an anti-roll bar droplink. not cheap from Citroen #163;300) and after 100k they can start leaking. As far as aware, rebuild kits available.

They’re pretty as aside from all the computing in the car, they’re the parts stop the car leaning. It doesn’t all, so it’s obviously parimeter that was missed in due to the way some people treat cars or something.

For motorsport though, it’s not be competitive in my opinion. The UK cars came with a 2.0 8v turbo which was always gearing for rather than outright The gear ratios (gearbox is from a diesel) reflect It doesn’t really like to rev and all it’s power low down.

The in performance is strong and consistant and the chimes in at around 2.5k but sprinting through the gears is not strong point and it loses of ground in between changes.

reason it won’t be competitive is weight. It’s nearly You could probably get it down to 1300’s by losing the interior and all the day to day ( for example it has 11 spheres, and they around 6kg each where a controlled Xantia has 6), but it’ll understeer like a bh under sharp fast corners and destroy tyres!

In fact, Michelin comissioned Pilot tyres in the size for these cars. ‘WangLi’ probably not last 5000miles in use where on a normal car they last 15k.

I have making a track car from one though just for a hobby. and caged with a suitable combo. Shave the flywheel a bit, play with the settings and fit a decent FMI.

into fitting a 16v head a GTi-6 and fabrication manifolds etc to

With the suspension, you can adjust the of a sphere aby altering the size of the the fluid flows through. hole= softer springing. If you a smaller hole, try a sphere another model which different pressures.

For example, to stiffen a BX 16v for track you can fit XM front spheres to the back of a BX and Hydractive ones to the front, but another (dull) topic!) a track or similar, a small rocket screamer hot hatch probably be more of a weapon if been setup for the track. But missing the beauty of the Activa, it can be as good yet ride very and comfortably on the road.

Anyway, through all the rumours and pub ammo, say no it’s not a good car for that, but yes an awesome car. Shame struggle to better 20mpg!
