Reassuringly German. Made in France. That’s Citroen’s cute slogan for the C5 – and it says a lot about where this new saloon and estate is on the market.

Realistically the Citroen C5 is still a volume large family car – in either guise – but the most recent model is a big step up in interior quality and exterior looks from the previous version.

Available in saloon and estate body style, the new Citroen C5 also has large dimensions and vast amounts of passenger and boot space.

The first-generation model went on sale in the UK in 2001, while a second generation was introduced in 2008.

The current Citroen C5 is available in three specifications with entry-level VTR and VTR+ aimed more at the affordable family market and the range-topping Exclusive model targeting business users looking for more equipment.

Citroen offers four engine choices with the C5; three diesels and a single petrol in the shape of a 1.6-litre engine developed with the help of BMW. The diesel options range from a small 1.6-litre 107bhp unit to a 3.0-litre V6 developing 237bhp.

More recently, an update to the C5 range has seen the inclusion of the brand’s e-HDi technology with the smallest of its diesel engines.

The technology includes fuel-saving start-stop technology and an ‘e-booster’ to make starts smoother and helps push fuel economy up over 60mpg in the official ratings.

Citroen’s link up with BMW to develop engines is an indication of the direction the car maker took with the Citroen C5. It is marketed as a mix of German quality and French design to get the best of both worlds.

Citroen C5 reviews will inevitably refer to the French car maker’s attempts to take on its German rivals with a more stylish design than the traditional conservative large family cars.

Overall, the Citroen C5 is known for its high quality and well-insulated interiors which are uncluttered and well put together, a fact not missed by Citroen C5 reviews.

Citroen C5 ratings are also bolstered by a suspension system tweaked for comfort and refinement at the expense of steering, according to some Citroen C5 reviews.

New Citroen C5 reviews have been largely in agreement with this but past issues over reliability and resale values mean some reviews were traditionally mixed.
