: Just relax and go the flow

You’ll feel as you’re hovering in the air on the Citroen C5Hydractive suspension

There’s plenty of Citroen idiosyncrasy in in the interior of the Citroen C5 V6 Tourer.Pictures / Linklater

It’s no secret I’m a bit disappointed by the Citroen Why? Basically, it comes to the fact that it looks so

The DS5’s flamboyant, slightly styling reminds me of Citroen’s and most wonderful family from the past: XM, CX, even of one of the greatest cars ever the original DS.

Yes, I know Citroen the branding of old DS (Deesse, or goddess) has to do with new DS (which stands for Style, apparently). But still I’m sure you see it too.

But I am in the DS5 because it isn’t at all like a and wonderful Citroen to drive. is because despite the name, based on the platform of the C4/DS4 and has completely conventional suspension also happens to be a bit too hard, but another story).

A properly and wonderful Citroen family car at least one that looks a luxury jet – should floaty suspension that Space-1999 spheres at each of the car and pressurised hydraulic fluid. what the XM, CX and DS had. That’s Citroen is famous for.

In short, I wish the DS5 was a bit more the car you see on this page: the C5. Platform with parent company means Citroen’s unique suspension is on the endangered list, but the big C5 has it.

The C5 doesn’t come close to the style of the DS5, but in Tourer form it’s still sleek. Hydractive’s self-levelling is ideal for a wagon of course, but of its practicality I just love the way the C5 feels.

Once you’re under way it literally floats along in the magnificently relaxed manner. It feel like each of the car is suspended separately – it’s like the whole is hovering along as one entity.

in effect, is how the Hydractive system

The latest Hydractive III Plus fitted to the C5 not only automatically at high speed, but it offers a Sport mode to firm up the for fast cornering. I find concept ridiculous as the whole of a Hydractive Citroen is to waft at your own pace, but if you must – well, the option is

Citroen C5

This car is certainly capable of performance. The C5 comes in two specifications, diesel: a 2-litre and the flagship 3-litre V6 tested here. The V6 is magnificent: it makes 177kW/450Nm, all of that torque available a mere 1600rpm.

Clatter, – and you’re gone.

In Tourer form, the C5 V6 costs Some of the interior fit and finish that, but some betrays the mainstream origins.

Beautifully soft materials the parts of the dashboard you touch which creates a premium But some bits seem poorly thought out: a knob on the stereo that like a volume control but (instead, there’s a hard-to-find switch for that), and a cutout a small chrome garnish on the side that looks an extra little glovebox but It’s actually just a with a small chrome

The end.

Crucially though, still plenty of Citroen in evidence: for example, the C5 retains the signature fixed-hub steering (once fitted to the C4 but now dropped), keeps the centre-boss and all its pushbutton static while the rim spins it. The seats are trimmed in high-quality and the driver’s seat will give you a massage if you ask nicely.

The C5 wouldn’t be properly French a few things that make you your head. And it wouldn’t be a cool Citroen if it didn’t Hydractive suspension. A little C5-flavour would go a long way in the
