Cheap, flimsy and fun

I unfortunately only had my AX for less than 4 months before it had an unfortunate meeting with a new Vauxhall Astra at about 45mph. Despite the complete lack of any safety equipment beyond a seatbelt and a soft steering wheel, I survived with just a broken femur! so, it gets 2 stars for safety, because I expected I would die if I crashed.

Practicality: for such a small car, the boot was very generous, and you could move the seat back forward a couple of inches for extra space (like you can on many modern cars). Mine did not feature the spilt rear seats, but i could completely remove the seat back for a flat load area, which was very handy. Also the 5 doors allowed good rear access.

Reliability: it never broke down (except when i ran out of petrol) and looking at its history it seemed that the few problems it did have were from neglect. It also had virtually no rust after 17 years thanks to a galvanised body! As usal on french cars the electrics weren’t great, my ‘special edition’ model featured central locking (that did not work) and electric windows which required some assistance to reach the top.

Running costs: I chose an AX on the basis it was cheap to buy and run. As a 22yr old male, I managed to buy and insure the car for under £800, that included 9 months MOT and 3 months tax. My journey to work was a 6 mile run 4 times a day, this gave me around 50mpg, not always driven gently.

How it drives: The car has quite soft suspension, which means is pretty smooth even at speed on country roads. This did lead to rather poor handling, and the cheapo tyres really didnt help that (nor the braking, which didnt help it to stop hitting the Astra!). However, without power steering, it was reasonably direct, and had lots of feel, which is more fun than most modern cars.

Its light weight and low gearing meant its 60bhp went a long way, giving it a 0-60 time of under 11s, rivalling modern family cars with twice the power. The gearing also meant you could be reasonably confident of overtaking cars. My other car is the same weight, almost as much power, but more modern with higher gears and its much harder to overtake with confidence.

Summary: comfortable, cheap, reliable, handy for moving things, could be safer.
