R/T – Chrysler Neon Car Review

THE Neon, with its American personality, has never won the hearts of British drivers, but Chrysler has another go with a range-topping 150bhp R/T model.

Like the LX versions, it offers a wide range of goodies, adding some of its own at modest cost, and is more driveable.

In American fashion, the R/T saloon is still at its best on distance drives, the extra oomph of the upgraded two-litre engine ensuring strainless cruising. But the increased sportiness of the set-up does mean the car takes more kindly to poorer quality surfaces.

Along with the uprated suspension, the Neon R/T features 16in alloys with wide, low-profile tyres and side skirts, a big boot spoiler, deep front air dam and twin chrome exhaust pipes all of which creates quite a jazzy look.

Inside, there’s smart new dark slate leather upholstery and American comfort expectations mean the cabin is an attractive place to be – a very effective aircon/heater system, powered height-adjusting driver’s seat, leather grips and four-disc in-dash CD changer are in the £13,995 package. There’s also an array of cup holders and storage areas.

Safety and security measures include front and side airbags, ABS with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and Thatcham Cat. 1 alarm and immobiliser.

Yet there remain some hang-ups. The saloon body creates space limitations, the spoiler contributes to poor rear visibility, the A pillars also hinder lateral viewing and the firmish steering lacks feedback and is obviously more suited to those endlessly-straight American highways.

Get on a motorway and you appreciate the R/T’s most appealing qualities. The ride is easy and relaxing rather than overtly sporty, but the car is lively enough, with a top speed of more than 130mph and 135lb ft of pulling power available should you need a quick burst. Grip is good, too.

Economy – an average 35mpg and 24mpg in town – is not brilliant, however, and the 196g/km CO2 rating reflects the high capacity in this small family saloon.

As compensation, you get dash from a car out of the same stable as the Chrysler Viper, with a time well under 10 seconds for the standstill to 62mph sprint.

That, its attractive price and its sharp looks could mean that the Neon, one of the top-selling cars in the States, will begin to have more of an impact over here.
