About the Chevrolet Uplander

The Uplander was Chevrolet’s latest entry in the minivan market. Introduced in 2005, the Uplander replaced both the mid-sized Chevrolet Venture and the rear-wheel drive Astro mid-sized van. The Uplander was produced through 2009, when Chevrolet retooled the Doraville, GA, assembly line for its Traverse crossover production.

Chevrolet only found moderate success with the Uplander, as the minivan always had stiff competition from the well-established Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country.

The Uplander comes in two wheelbases and two trim levels. The LS and LT trim levels are available on the regular wheelbase. The LT alone offers the extended wheelbase option, which features nearly 16 cubic feet more of interior volume.

On either wheelbase, the Uplander can seat up to 7 people. It is powered by a 3.9-liter V6 engine that produces 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm, and 240 pound-feet of torque at 4800 rpm. This engine is also available with E85 FlexFuel capability.

A 4-speed automatic transmission powers the front wheels. Estimated fuel economy for the Uplander is 16 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. With the FlexFuel version of the 3.9-liter engine, drivers can expect 12 miles per gallon in city driving and 17 miles per gallon on the highway when using E85 ethanol.

Chevy heavily based its Uplander on the earlier Chevrolet Venture. Aside from an extensive body makeover, the automaker equipped the original Uplander with a 3.5-liter High Value V6 that generated 200 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. Chevy introduced 3.9-liter V6 in 2006 and and the following year it became the standard for the Uplander.

The automaker duplicated the vehicle’s platform for several other minivans sold under different General Motors marques, including the Buick Terraza and Pontiac Montana SV6. The Pontiac Aztek and Buick Rendezvous were also based on the Venture/Uplander profile.

Power adjustable mirrors, dual-stage driver and passenger side air bags, first-row bucket seats, AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 capability and XM Satellite Radio with 3 months of trial service are standard. Optional features include leather seats, an entertainment system with DVD player and 8 inch monitor, heated front seats, integrated child safety seats, rear parking assist and side impact air bags for first and second-row passengers.

The suggested retail price for the 2008 Uplander ranged from $21,250 to nearly $34,000, making it competitive in pricing with the Caravan and Grand Caravan of the same year. The Uplander and Caravan also had similar features, with the exception of the Caravan’s Swivel’n Go seating and the recently introduced 4-liter V6 for the 2008 model year, capable of producing 251 horsepower.
