About the Chevrolet Tracker

The Chevrolet Tracker is a mini SUV that appeals to those who want to have some off-road fun, good fuel economy, a truck-like ride, and a reasonably low price. It had an MSRP between $19,865 and $22,715. Tracker evolved from another car, is similar to the Suzuki model, and was generated into other models around the world.

Most production was done outside the U.S. Most Trackers are a 4-door SUV, but it was also sold as a 2-door convertible and as a 2-door SUV. It has limited cargo space because it is a small vehicle, with about 50 square feet of cargo space.

The front-engine SUV has rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive.

First sales of Tracker were in 1989 in Canada, and the vehicle was eventually assembled and sold in many other countries. It was in production from 1998 through 2004 as the Chevrolet Tracker. They were assembled at the Ingersoll, Ontario plant.

The series was discontinued in the United States and Canada by 2004. Early models were only made in 4-wheel drive, but later on there were convertible and 2-door hardtop options. Fuel economy by 2004 was 17/20 city/highway with the standard V6 engine.

Later models were assembled in Japan, Mexico, Canada, Argentina, United States, and by 2012, only in Ecuador.

The Chevrolet Tracker is made using a light truck chassis. It is certified as a light truck, but has many comfort features of a small car. It is still sold around the world, but most U.S. and Canadian Tracker sales dropped off when production ended in 2004.

Early models were powered by a 1.6-L I4, 95 horsepower engine teamed with a 5-speed manual or 3- or 4-speed automatic transmission. All were 4-wheel drive until 1992, when the 2-wheel drive convertible models were made. A two-door hardtop model was made through 1995 when it was replaced with a four-door hardtop wagon.

Tracker had some good light truck features, such as chrome Rally Wheels on the LSi model, spare tire cover, special bucket seats, swing out tailgate, brush guards, fog lights, and MacPherson struts. Interior features include a fold-down split rear seat to accommodate additional cargo, AM/FM/Stereo radio with CD player, air conditioning, intermittent wipers, cruise control, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. There are three trim options, base, ZR2, and LT.

To save space, the spare tire mounts on the tailgate, which swings open to the right. Tracker runs on 15 tires, and the wagon will seat 5 people.

The 2012 Chevrolet Tracker is made in Ecuador, and it has standard daytime running lights, tilt steering columns, remote keyless entry, and elevated seating. It is powered by a 2.5-L V6 engine that gives up to 165 horsepower, and it has a 4-speed automatic transmission. The newest Tracker has 5 model styles, a base 4-door model, base 2-door convertible, ZR2 2-door 4×4 convertible, ZR2 4-door 4×4, and Tracker LT.
