About This Model

The Chevy Lumina appeared for the 1990 model year as a replacement for the aged Celebrity.

The new car was a significant upgrade from the model it replaced, with more aerodynamic styling, more powerful engines and a fully independent suspension. However, the Lumina had serious competition from the Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, and was handily outsold by all three during its 10-year.

The Chevy Lumina appeared for the 1990 model year as a replacement for the aged Celebrity. The new car was a significant upgrade from the model it replaced, with more aerodynamic styling, more powerful engines and a fully independent suspension. However, the Lumina had serious competition from the Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, and was handily outsold by all three during its 10-year lifespan.

The Lumina nameplate was also affixed to Chevrolet#39;s minivan, the Lumina APV, however the two vehicles were not mechanically related.

The Chevy Lumina shared the same basic underpinnings with the rest of the GM-10 cars, the Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and Pontiac Grand Prix. It was also the first four-door version of the platform. Despite its new sheetmetal, the Lumina was based on a platform that by 1990 was already two years old.

As such, the brand-new sedan looked somewhat dated, which wasn#39;t helped by the peculiar mix of curved hood and formal roofline. A coupe introduced part way through the first year looked much better.

The Lumina was available in several trim levels, including a sporty Euro trim that included a stiffer suspension and other handling tricks. In 1991, the Lumina Z34 coupe was introduced with a new twin-cam 3.4-liter engine that was based on the pushrod 3.1 engine in other Luminas and elsewhere in GM products. With 210 horsepower when equipped with the standard five-speed manual transmission it proved a potent combination.

A Euro 3.4 package with the same engine was available in 1992 for sedans, but the engine was available only with an automatic in that guise, limiting it to 200 horsepower.

The Lumina underwent mostly minor changes from 1992 through the 1994 model year, most notably the addition of standard anti-lock brakes in 1994, and Chevy dropping the slow-selling four-cylinder engine that same year. However, sales were generally poor against the Ford Taurus, due at least in part to the Lumina#39;s lack of standard driver#39;s airbag.

In calendar year 1994, the 1995 Lumina was introduced to much better reviews. The styling had been thoroughly revamped, and the look was much better integrated, even though the car#39;s underpinnings were virtually unchanged. The interior was also significantly reworked, with a more modern dash that included standard dual airbags. The coupe version was renamed Monte Carlo, and both sedan and Monte Carlo were again available with V-6 engines mated to four-speed automatic transmissions.

The base 3.1-liter V-6 increased horsepower from 140 to 160, while the twin-cam 3.4-liter boosted power to 210 with the automatic. The cars were available in three trim levels: Base, LS and a sporty LTZ trim that arrived for the 1996 model year. For the most part, the second-generation Chevy Lumina received few changes during its life span, with the exception of the 3.4-liter V-6 being replaced by a 3.8-liter V-6 for the 1998 model year.

It survived unchanged until replaced by the Chevrolet Impala in 2001, although the car was produced for that model year and sold exclusively to rental fleets.
