About This Model

Chevrolet introduced the Camaro for the 1967 model year, and with it spurred one of the greatest automotive rivalries, one that continues to this day.

Designed as a counter to the wildly successful Ford Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro was introduced with much fanfare. Originally known as the Panther project, the Camaro name was introduced at a special press conference held on June.

Designed as a counter to the wildly successful Ford Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro was introduced with much fanfare. Originally known as the Panther project, the Camaro name was introduced at a special press conference held on June 28, 1966. When asked what a Camaro was, the reply was that it was a small vicious animal that eats Mustangs.

The car itself was revealed in September 1966 as a 1967 model.

Available only as a two-door coupe and convertible, the Camaro#39;s basic underpinnings were based off the compact Chevy II platform, but the engine bay was designed to accommodate engines from the larger Chevelle.

There were four generations of Chevrolet Camaro, all available with a variety of six-cylinder and V-8 engines – and even a four-cylinder during the darkest days of the 70s fuel crisis – but the Camaro has always been associated with bad boy V-8 power. The first generation spanned from 1967 through 1969, and while the #39;67 and #39;68 coupes and convertibles were different only in the details, the #39;69 took a dramatic turn.

While the roof itself was the same, the lower body was completely restyled. Since an all-new Camaro debuted for the 1970 model year, this unique model is widely considered the most valuable of the vintage Camaros. The second-generation Camaro was still generally based on the first-generation underpinnings, but with a larger and heavier body.

It also survived longer than any other Camaro, losing power but gaining luxury as the 70s progressed, finally being replaced in the 1982 model year.

With sleek modern styling and, eventually, fuel-injected engines, the third-generation Camaro offered good handling for the time and was a true performance bargain. In 1992, the fourth-generation Camaro debuted with a new A-arm front suspension and dramatic styling inside and out. Lasting for 10 years, this fourth Camaro sold well, but was ultimately undone by the popularity of SUVs over sporty coupes.

Camaro fans rejoiced, however, when Chevrolet introduced a Camaro concept car at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show and announced plans to produce a new Camaro. Scheduled to roll off production lines in March, 2009, the 2010 Camaro will feature an independent rear suspension for the first time, styling that pays homage to the classic 1969 model, and the most powerful array of base and upgrade engines in the car#39;s history.

Significant models in the Camaro#39;s long history are too numerous to mention, but the Z28 and SS performance packages deserve special mention.

With enhanced suspension, engines and brakes, these high performance Camaros were not just top of the line, but the basis for Chevy#39;s factory racing efforts in Trans Am against – what else – the Ford Mustang. The third generation Camaro was also used as the spec vehicle in the International Race of Champions (IROC), and the commemorative version of that Camaro called the IROC-Z became synonymous with mid-80s performance and style.
