Chevrolet Blazer

The Chevrolet Blazer was built before SUV entered anyone’s vocabulary and would be one of the first vehicles to carry that moniker. The S-10 Chevrolet Blazer was discontinued in 2005.

The S-10 Chevrolet Blazer was first introduced to the U.S. market in 1990. There are two distinctly different vehicles that shared the Chevrolet Blazer name. The original Chevrolet Blazer, labeled as K5, was in production from 1969 to 1994. Larger than the S-10 Blazer, it is a full-size SUV that competed against the Ford Bronco.

The Chevrolet Blazer that most people would recognize today is based on the Chevrolet S-10 truck.

About the Chevrolet Blazer

The Chevrolet Blazer is a midsize SUV known for its versatility and durability. Older generation Blazers have a bench front seat; later generations have bucket seats and a center console. Optional four-wheel drive affords drivers the opportunity to venture off-road.

Smaller than its TrailBlazer counterpart, which Chevy introduced in 2002, the Chevrolet Blazer satisfies drivers who want a stable ride and room for cargo.

The Chevrolet Blazer offers appealing performance and handling. Its truck-like appearance doesn’t prevent it from having a relatively quiet ride. Acceleration is responsive, and it gets 15/20 mpg city/highway, which compares well to other vehicles in its class.

Chevrolet Blazer Features

In 2005, the Chevrolet Blazer was available only as a two-door; four-door models were available for fleet sales. The two-door model came equipped with a 190 horsepower 4.3-liter V-6 engine, and a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic transmission is also available as an option. The base Chevrolet Blazer came with two-wheel drive, but Autotrac four-wheel drive was available as an option.

This system engages four-wheel drive when it senses that additional traction is needed.

The 4.3-liter V-6 engine produced 190 hp at 4400 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. Fifteen-inch alloy wheels came standard. On vehicles that have the optional Autotrac four-wheel drive, a ZR2 Wide-Stance Sport Suspension Package upgrades the shock absorbers and tunes the rear suspension was available.

Standard in the 2005 models was an independent front short and long arm suspension with anti-roll bar, sport suspension, front coil springs, and gas-pressurized front shocks.

An available convenience package included cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, heated exterior mirrors, and power locks and windows.

The Chevrolet Blazer Xtreme trim package included Z87 Sport Suspension, low-profile tires with Xtreme five-spoke aluminum wheels, a sporty lower front fascia with fog lamps, body-colored grille, lower body-side cladding, and large wheel flares. Windows were deeply tinted and the steering wheel is wrapped with leather. This trim package also offers a heavy-duty platform hitch with a maximum towing capacity of 2000 pounds.

A sunroof was optional, as well as striping or Flame/Heat decal packages. A stereo with an in-dash six-CD changer is also available.

The 2005 Chevrolet Blazer received five stars on side crash safety tests.

Seating four people comfortably, the interior of the two-door Blazer offered front bucket seats and a center console. The gearshift lever for both the standard and automatic transmissions was located on the floor. A rear split-folding bench seat could be folded down, more than doubling the amount of available cargo space (from 30 cubic feet to 60.6 cubic feet).

The Chevrolet Blazer came equipped with a rear liftgate. The rear window opens separately, flipping up to allow drivers to reach in and access the cargo space.

The 1990 model, which was based on the full-size truck platform, housed a 5.7-liter V-8 engine and manual transmission. When equipped with two-wheel drive, a rear ABS was offered.

From 1991 through 1993, the smaller S-10-based Chevrolet Blazers included a 4.3-liter V-6. A four-wheel ABS was available on all 1992 models, as were redesigned bucket seats.

The 1994 model had a 4.3-liter V-6 engine that produced 165 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque.

1995 ushered in the second generation of the Blazer, but it lost its S-10 label. Exterior and interior sizes are larger, making it a midsize SUV. In 1995, a 4.3-liter Vortec V-6 engine with 195 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque was made standard.

In 1996, a 4.3-liter Vortec engine was offered with 190 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. The spare tire was moved to under the cargo bay in 1995. Driver airbag and air-conditioning were standard equipment on these models. In the 1998 design, standard equipment included automatic headlight control, four-wheel disc brakes, and a shift selector mounted on the steering column.

The front end was also re-styled.

Chevrolet introduced a Limited Edition model in 1999, featuring gold-accented rims and trim and other cosmetic modifications.The standard engine on this model is the 4.3-liter Vortec V-6, offering 190 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque.

Headlights and daytime running lights, previously only available on the larger Trailblazer model, were installed on Chevrolet Blazers in 2002. From this point onward, one could only obtain the four-door model though fleet sales.

Models came equipped with a 4.3-liter Vortec V-6 engine that produced 190 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque.
