2014 Porsche Cayman

It is easy to recognize a Cayman from Boxster. The first has a hardtop, the other not. Naturally, Porsche officials do not see things the same way. For them, they are two distinct models. It is debatable.

Apart from a handful of additional horsepower, increased rigidity and improved sound system, nothing really distinguishes a Cayman from a Boxster. And there is really nothing wrong with that. Apart from the roof.

Metal is always more expensive than canvas.

Typically, a convertible is always more expensive than off. It was necessary for an exception to prove the rule. Here it is: the Cayman commands a higher price than the Boxster.

That somehow reaffirms the thesis Porsche on the specificity of these two models.

By looking more closely, however, this second generation Cayman enjoys changes applied to the Boxster in its redesign a year ago. Same technical architecture, same running gear and roughly the same performance. The engines offered on the Cayman develop both more power (10 hp.) And more torque (6 and 7 lb-ft depending on version) as proposed by the Boxster.

In the end, it did not matter much. And Porsche doesn#8217;t hide it. The Cayman is a tenth of a second quicker to reach 60 mph from a standstill a gets a top speed of 1 mph above the Boxster.

Beyond the statistics, the 2014 Porsche Cayman captivates more than the Boxster. But to appreciate the #8211; subtle #8211; differences, it is essential to drive it on a track. It is true that it is in this environment that the newest Porsche shows off all these qualities.

But before you get on the track, make sure to benefit from the S version #8211; more powerful #8211; and add some options like the Sport Chrono package ($ 1850) and PDK ($ 3,200). At the risk of offending the purists, the dual-clutch transmission is faster and provides better savings at the pump than the standard transmission. Also, it sells better.

The same recommendations apply to potential buyers of the basic model.

Please read the instructions

Driving, Cayman makes you swallow the landscape, crushes your #8220;love handles#8221; against the side of the seats. Everything happens very quickly. Maybe too fast for some people who will have the false impression to fully be in control. This Porsche will put you in confidence, but can easily take it away if you do not tame its behavior, once the driving aids are disconnected. If you drive over the limit, the rear stalls.

Too slowly, and the front is resistant. The challenge is to find the right rhythm. We must also know how to balance and suppress that cry when the belt simultaneously bites the shoulder and lower abdomen during hard braking.

Once the instructions assimilated, the fun begins. The owners of the previous generation model are bound to feel a less precise direction now that it has an electric assist rather than hydraulic. Others won#8217;t notice.

As for suspension, it proves rather startling in their basic configuration.

Perfectly balanced with its engine mounted centrally and stable thanks to its wider track, the Cayman does not #8220;disintegrate#8221; while hitting holes and bumps as some sports cars of the same category. It is firm, but not to the point of being uncomfortable over a long distance. The same cannot be said of the hearing comfort.

This is when the audio system developed by the Burmester company sold at $6730 comes into play#8230; No comment.

Options, and even more options

It is well known Porsche cashes dearly for options. Taking inventory of the standard features of the Cayman is perhaps not as long as your grocery list, but the essential is there. Almost. We must still pay for metallic paint ($ 710) or a rear parking sensor ($ 530).

Note that smokers can get an ashtray at no additional cost.

Practical side, we note the presence of two luggage compartments. The one at the front and the other at the back, under the tailgate. By adding the volume of both, we get 15 cubic feet or the equivalent of a midsize sedan.

In the end, this Porsche is now the one that, in my opinion, resembles the most the original philosophy of the brand. Even more than the legendary 911 which continues to gentrify itself through generations, the Cayman is a pure sports car and deserves to be considered the new standard of the brand. There, I said it.

– Sportier than the 911

– Improved ficnish

– Increased trunk capacity

– (Expensive) options needed
