Car Review: An all new design on the 2013 Lexus LS 460

DALLAS . September 9, 2013 What’s new this year in the Lexus lineup is the Lexus LS 460. A luxury sedan, the Lexus LS 460 for 2013 offers even bigger and better styling with a new face that is not only more aggressive, but an interior with more quality materials and padded surfaces for extra comfort.

Take note too that the touchscreen is now a remote touch device with a mouselike control and a large screen for better viewing.

Sitting squarely among the competition for the luxury sedan market, this Lexus will be vying for buyers who are considering the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ or the Mercedes Benz S-Class.

The LS 460 is full-size, but is available in either a regular or extended wheelbase, the latter called a LS 460 L. Offering room for five passengers, the L has a four-passenger option adding a center console in the back seat.

The basic goodies on the LS 460 regular or extended wheelbase are 18-inch wheels, adaptive automatic xenon headlights, LED fog lamps, auto-dimming and power-folding mirrors, automatic wipers, front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, sunroof, power door closers, keyless ignition/entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, front seat memory functions, and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

Electronics on this Lexus include the Remote Touch interface with a 12.3-inch display screen, navigation system and all the audio connectivity goodies like asmartphone-integrated apps and a 10-speaker sound system.

The Comfort package automatically comes standard on the 460 L and will give you a power-closing trunk, heated and cooled front seats, and a power rear sunshade.

In addition, if you opt for stand-alone features you choose from 19-inch wheels, adjustable air suspension, upgraded leather upholstery, or a heated steering wheel.

There is an All Weather package that will give you headlamp washers and a wiper de-icer or the Ultra Luxury package with a four-zone climate control, six-way power rear seats that not only heat, but also cool and massage.

The LS 460 regular wheelbase comes with a F Sport package offering 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, sport-tuned air suspension and steering, transmission shift paddles on the steering wheel and rev-matched downshifts.

The LS 460 L offers the Executive-Class Seating package with comforts like a two-seat configuration and center console, power passenger-side ottoman, power rear side sunshades and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a power drop-down screen.

Under the hood the 2013 Lexus LS 460 has a 4.6-liter V8 engine pushing 386 horsepower with 360 pound-feet of torque on the standard rear-wheel drive or 360 horsepower and 347 pound feet of torque on the all-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic transmission standard.

For safety, this Lexus comes equipped with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front knee, front side and side curtain airbags as well as a rearview camera. There is also the Lexus Safety Connect with automatic collision notification, emergency assist button, enhanced roadside assistance and a stolen vehicle locator.

Depending on additional features there is also a blind-spot warning system with a rear cross-traffic alert system, an adaptive cruise control system with a pre-collision system and an Advanced Pre-Collision system with a driver-attention monitor equipped to take action in a dangerous situation if the driver does not.

The interior on the 2013 Lexus LS 460 definitely keeps up with the competition with the redesign as soft leather or a leather looking vinyl has been used with updated stitching and more wood trim for a modern look and feel.

Take note that the Remote Touch interface controls just about everything inside the vehicle and it is quite easy to use and understand.

The seats front and back are comfortable and spacious even in the regular wheelbase, big kudos to the long wheelbase L as the ride at this point is downright luxurious add to that the Executive-Class Seating package and you are top-of-the-line along with an 18 cubic feet trunk.

Of course, a vehicle with this interior has to drive just as well and this Lexus does just that offering a uber-quiet ride and with the Comfort mode (you get the choice of this or Normal or Sport mode) and you can only wonder if life can get any better.

Should You Need to Know: Of particular interest is that the Executive-Class package option is 0.4 of an inch lower than the other versions complete with air springs just for the F-Sport and stabilizer bars too.

Miles Per Gallon: EPA-estimated fuel economy is 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

Cost: You will find a price tag of about $72,885 is where this one sits.
