Buick Regal

When it comes to longevity, the Buick Regal stands on its own pedestal. First introduced by Buick in 1973, the Regal was produced continuously until 2004, when the brand discontinued it. A new Buick Regal resurfaced in 2011, marketed as an upscale sport sedan.

The Regal is also in full production in China where a model has released every year since 1999.

About the Buick Regal

The Buick Regal has a long history of reliability. It is classified as a midsize sedan and has front-wheel-drive.

The older versions of the Buick Regal were sportier. In fact, the Buick Regal Grand National, a model introduced in 1982, is considered a muscle car classic and highly desirable to collectors.

Later models take on the more subdued sedan body, making them suitable as family cars.

Buick Regal Evolution

The Buick Regal was revamped in 2009 into a high-performance sedan that is more sporty than family-oriented. The 2012 Regal comes available in three models: the standard Regal, the Regal Turbo, and the Regal GS.

The base model has a direct-injected 2.4-liter, ECOTEC four-cylinder engine. An optional 2.4-liter engine with eAssist technology is also available. eAssist is a mild hybrid system that utilizes a lithium battery, fuel cutoff, and low rolling assistance tires to improve performance of the engine as well as fuel economy—25/36 mpg city/highway. Premium models of the standard Regal add trim features, better safety, and an improved sound system.

The Turbo version of the Regal has a 2.0-liter engine with higher performance than its base cousin. A Harman Kardon sound system is included in the Premium II version for an improved audio experience.

The GS version contains a 2.0-liter high engine. It has both automatic and manual controls, depending on the driver’s preference, and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under seven seconds.

Buick Regal Models

The Buick Regal has gone through many developmental stages over the years.

Buick Regal

The first generation Buick Regal was introduced in 1973. The car came as a two-door coupe or a four-door sedan version. The Regal had a hardtop roof with frameless doors, a sleek silhouette that mirrors the muscle cars of the era.

The coupe version ran from 1974 to 1977, when the first generation was taken out of production.

The second generation Regal was introduced in 1978 and continued production until 1987. The body was downsized and squared-off. The Grand National model is still the most popular version of the Regal from this era, as its muscle car aesthetic pleases everyone. Several NASCAR teams used this Regal generation.

A 3.8-liter engine came standard, but a 5.0-liter version was also available.

The third generation was introduced for the 1988 model year and was produced until 1996. The third generation was the first front-drive model and, unlike its predecessor, did not offer a performance option. However, this was the generation that improved upon the model, increasing efficiency and driver safety.

Anti-lock brakes were made standard in 1992 and airbags in 1994.

The fourth generation began production in 1997 and was discontinued in 2004. The Regal of this generation closely resembled the Buick Century, although the appearance of the two machines differed slightly. The car offered a supercharged option and brought back some of the speed that the Grand National once gave the Regal line.

The Buick Lacrosse replaced the Regal in North American in 2005.

The fifth and current generation of the Regal line was introduced in 2009. Its sleek design and super performance has been targeted to bring a younger generation to the car.

The Buick Regal has performed splendidly in the Chinese market and has been in production there since 1999. The fifth generation made its first appearance in China in 2008, a year ahead of its North American counterpart.

Whether you’re looking for a used, high-performance muscle car, like the Grand National that can blow your hat off at acceleration, or a four-door midsize sedan, that fits you like a glove and treats you like royalty, the Buick Regal is a safe, efficient, and beautiful choice.
