2013 Buick Regal Receives Standard eAssist Hybrid Technology

The 2013 Buick Regal with standard eAssist will achieve an EPA-estimated 36 MPG highway.

Buick has announced that the 2013 Buick Regal luxury sedan will receive the eAssist suite of fuel-saving technologies as standard equipment.  eAssist, available today on the 2012 Buick Regal, mates an electric motor and battery pack with the Regal#8217;s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to capture and supply energy otherwise lost when braking and decelerating.  It also incorporates new aerodynamic improvements designed to reduce drag, combining for an improvement of around 25 percent to Regal#8217;s gas mileage.

eAssist became standard equipment on the Buick LaCrosse in Columbia SC for the 2012 model year, where it provides a near-full-size sedan with impressive EPA-estimated fuel economy of 25 MPG city and 36 MPG highway.  LaCrosse with eAssist has seen exceptional sales during its first year on the market, outselling the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid by 3-to-1 and the Lexus HS250h by 5-to-1 in January according to Hybridcars.com.  With eAssist#8217;s addition to Regal#8217;s already-impressive list of standard equipment (including heated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, USB, and so much more) in lieu of the base 2.4-liter trim level, it should make the Regal an even more compelling option for buyers looking at premium sedans.

2013 Buick Regal Turbocharged Engines Return to Columbia SC

Columbia car shoppers shouldn#8217;t write off the Buick Regal as a car that#8217;s gone soft for green cred, though.  Regal#8217;s optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine remains an option for 2013 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission.

Also returning for 2013 is the Buick Regal GS, which features a 270-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, Interactive Drive Control with the model-exclusive GS mode for tighter handling, Brembo front brakes, and Buick#8217;s innovative HiPer Strut front suspension designed to reduce or eliminate torque steer found on other high-performance front-wheel drive cars.  All Regal models draw their origins in a platform developed by some of Europe#8217;s finest engineers on its most demanding roads.  With sharp handling and Buick#8217;s world-renowned luxury, it#8217;s a package that#8217;s hard to beat.

2012 Buick Regal GS Marks Return of Buick Performance to Columbia SC

Perhaps the most anticipated addition to the Buick Regal lineup is the Buick Regal GS, the return of a performance sedan to the Buick lineup.  Featuring a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a standard six-speed manual transmission, standard Interactive Drive Control System that lets the suspension go from standard settings to both Sport and GS modes for a more sporting feel when the driver desires it.  Special HiPerStrut front suspension borrowed from the larger Buick LaCrosse sedan reduces torque steer, while standard 19-inch (and available 20-inch) alloy wheels with the choice of all-season or performance tires lend an aggressive look to complement the unique front and rear fascia.

Simplified Buick Regal Packages Benefit Columbia SC Shoppers

Across the rest of the 2012 Buick Regal lineup, the packaging and trim options have been greatly simplified to increase the odds that the Buick Regal that Columbia car shoppers prefer will be available in stock for immediate delivery.  From 13 packages in 2011, Buick now offers just five including the GS:

The Buick Regal Base model still comes exceptionally well-equipped with standard leather-appointed seating with front heated seats, IntelliLink touchscreen radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, halogen fog lamps, heated outside mirrors, StabiliTrak stability control, six months of OnStar with turn-by-turn navigation, and a six-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control.

The 2012 Buick Regal Premium 1 package adds a 120-volt household power outlet, E-Z Key passive entry with keyless start, ultrasonic rear parking assist, HomeLink universal home remote, and an 8-way power passenger seat with rear lumbar controls.

Upgrading to the 2012 Buick Regal Premium 2 package adds even more luxury amenities, including thorax side airbags for the rear seats (bringing the total airbag count to eight), a 9-speaker 320-watt Harman/Kardon premium sound system, and Bi-Xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps.

The 2012 Buick Regal Premium 3 package adds the popular 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.  It also adds stainless steel dual exhaust, variable-effort power steering, and the Interactive Drive Control system with Standard, Sport, and Tour modes to allow drivers to alter their ride settings with the press of a button.

2012 Buick Regal eAssist Features Mild Hybrid Technology

2012 Buick Regal models with the Base, Premium 1, and Premium 2 packages are available with the highly-anticipated eAssist system of fuel-saving technologies.  The 2012 Buick Regal eAssist features an onboard electric motor that allows the engine to cut on and off effortlessly combined with special aluminum wheels and tires as well as aerodynamic upgrades. While costing significantly less than a full-scale hybrid vehicle, eAssist allows fuel economy improvements of up to 25 percent compared to the standard 2.4L Ecotec engine, with Buick estimating highway fuel economy around 37 miles per gallon.

Buick Regal Turbo with Six-Speed Manual Reviewed

The Buick Regal Turbo is the first Buick to offer Columbia SC a manual transmission in over a decade.

GM Inside News was able to sample the 2011 Buick Regal Turbo, this one equipped with the available six-speed manual transmission.  (Yes, Columbia, you read that correctly#8211;a Buick with a manual transmission.)  Their test car was a fully-loaded TO7 model, featuring a navigation system, Harman/Kardon premium sound, adaptive suspension with interactive drive control, sunroof, heated leather seats, and dual-zone climate control.

Having sampled the car before with the standard 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated engine and the 2.0-liter turbo with the standard six-speed automatic transmission, the reviewers were well-aware of the excellent underpinnings of the Regal.  The driving dynamics of its Epsilon II platform are improved further by the optional interactive drive control system, which allows the driver to select between normal, Tour, and Sport modes; the reviewer found a noticeable difference while accelerating down a fairly sharp on-ramp turn.

Another significant advantage to manual-equipped Regal Turbos is the increase in fuel economy, always on the mind of Columbia drivers as gas prices continue to climb higher and higher.  The US Environmental Protection Agency officially rates the Regal Turbo with the manual transmission at 20 city miles per gallon and 32 highway miles per gallon, up from both the automatic version#8217;s 18/28 estimates and the standard 2.4L engine#8217;s 19/30. GMI was #8220;perplexed by how easy it was to get good fuel economy out of the 2.0-liter, even when driving more on the #8220;enthusiastic#8221; side,#8221; with a peak run of 35.1 MPG on a highway trip.

Overall, the testers found the manual transmission to be good, with the shifter#8217;s throws a little long for high-performance driving but livable in both city and highway driving.  They also praised the clutch#8217;s linear feel and weight balance, along with the pedal placement that would allow a driver to use heel-and-toe shifting methods if they desired.  The Regal Turbo, like all Regal models, comes with an electronic parking brake rather than a conventional handbrake; they encountered no problems using the system even on hill-hold starts.

Buick Regal Turbo Compared to Volkswagen CC Sport

The Buick Regal Turbo offers many features not available on the VW CC.

Drivers in the Columbia, South Carolina area looking for a sporty mid-size sedan have many great options to choose from.  Shoppers looking at the Volkswagen CC, which made its debut in 2008, are especially wise to add the 2011 Buick Regal Turbo from Jim Hudson Buick in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Regal Turbo starts competitively priced compared to the Volkswagen CC Sport, with a Regal CXL Turbo TO1 starting at $29,495 compared to the CC#8217;s $28,560 before any offers.  Regal#8217;s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine makes 220 horsepower, which gives it the edge against the Volkswagen#8217;s even 200.  The advantage in torque also goes to the Regal, which makes 258 pound-feet#8211;nearly 25% more torque than the Volkswagen CC#8217;s 207.

If a sport-infused drive is what you seek, look no further than the 2011 Buick Regal.

Conventional wisdom would say that since the Buick Regal Turbo makes more power than the Volkswagen CC, it must suffer at the pump.  Columbia drivers will be delighted to find that the Buick Regal Turbo equipped with the available (and, for true driving connoisseurs, desirable) six-speed manual transmission achieves an EPA-estimated 32 highway miles per gallon compared to the Volkswagen#8217;s 31.

In addition, the Buick Regal Turbo#8217;s engine is a FlexFuel model, meaning it can run on blends of gasoline and ethanol up to E85.  As ethanol is derived from plants, it allows the Regal driver to use less fossil fuels while driving.  And once the Buick Regal with eAssist arrives, Columbia drivers will see the fuel economy gap widen even further.

Buick Regal Offers Better Warranty Than VW CC

Beyond power and fuel economy, the Buick Regal Turbo offers additional peace of mind that the Volkswagen CC Sport simply can#8217;t offer .  The Buick Regal#8217;s bumper-to-bumper limited warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles (whichever comes first), significantly better coverage than Volkswagen provides with its 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.  The same goes for the two vehicles#8217; powertrain warranties; while both last for five years, the Regal#8217;s goes up to 100,000 miles while Volkswagen only offers protection for 60,000 miles.

Should you need roadside assistance, Volkswagen will assist you for the length of the 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, but Buick offers roadside assistance for five years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).  In addition, Volkswagen doesn#8217;t offer the safety and convenience of OnStar service, which comes standard on the Regal for six months offering features like Automatic Crash Response that will attempt to contact OnStar when an accident is detected to have an OnStar Advisor summon emergency services.

Buick Regal Turbo Trumps Volkswagen CC Sport in Luxury Amenities

Luxury amenities abound in the Regal that the Volkswagen CC Sport doesn#8217;t even offer.  The first you#8217;ll notice the moment you get behind the wheel of each vehicle, as the Buick Regal Turbo offers standard leather-appointed seating, which is not even available on the CC Sport. Buick Regal CXL Turbo sedans in Columbia offer ultrasonic rear parking assist as standard equipment for added peace of mind while backing up, an option not even available on the Volkswagen CC.

Cold-natured front passengers in the Buick Regal will enjoy dual-zone automatic climate control; the Volkswagen only offers single-zone climate, nor does it offer heating ducts for the rear seats.  With your passengers comfortable in the Regal, you#8217;ll be able to enjoy the variety of XM Satellite Radio (with a three-month trial included), a service not available on the CC Sport.  And for those occasions you have to store long items in the trunk, Regal offers a rear-seat pass-through for convenience, a feature you won#8217;t find on the Volkswagen.
