New Bugatti won’t be faster than the Veyron.

Bugatti #160;has confirmed it will build a follow-up to the#160; world’s fastest car, its 430km/h Veyron .

But the famous French car maker has admitted it won’t mount an internal challenge to its record-breaking top speed.

#8220;There will not be a successor of the Veyron because you cannot succeed the Veyron,#8221; Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, president of Bugatti, has told Drive.

In an interview that his minder restricted solely to the newest variant of the Veyron, the Jean Bugatti tribute edition, Dr Schreiber went at least a little off topic to explain that the next model would be another #8220;super sports car#8221; but completely different to the Veyron.

It will not be a sedan, such as the#160; Galibier . exhibited by the marque in 2009.

#8220;This car,#8221; he said, gesturing passionately towards the new edition (restricted to just three cars!), #8220;is so important to the brand, because it created for Bugatti a new meaning.

#8220;We will close that chapter of Bugatti and the Veyron after these 450 cars and we will never open it.#8221;

Exactly what that means for those waiting for a new model #8211; Dr Schrieber also confirmed Bugatti would remain a one-model-at-a-time manufacturer #8211; is another two years away.

#8220;We have built about 350 cars since beginning of 2006, say seven and a half years. In the early days we said we would never sell more than 300 coupes and 150 roadsters.

#8220;These 300 coupes are already sold. And these 150 roadsters, we now have about 50 open to sell.#8221;

#160;At a car a week, that means a year#8217;s production, but there are also another 50 cars that have been ordered but not yet built.

#160;In two years, he says, all Veyron production will stop. The company will then have #8220;a bright future#8221; though, on the strength of this interview, not a very clear one.

Dr Schreiber said there will be a brand new car, that is completely different, but #8220;more likely a super sports car instead of a four-door limousine.#8221;

#8220;It will be a completely new car, it will also define some very special figures, completely new.#8221;

But will those special figures be as dramatic as those relating to the 895kW Veyron?

#8220;It will be different. It will not compete with this one. You can#8217;t compete with an icon.#8221;

So will it be smaller, or bigger #8230; or faster or#8230;?

Bugatti Veyron

#8220;Sorry for not telling you everything, but it will be an outstanding car.#8221;

#160;As for the Jean Bugatti Veyron, it pays homage to#160; La Voiture Noir . the all-black example of the legendary Type 7SC Atlantic coupe driven by Jean, son of company founder Ettore.

Jean designed the radical coupe in the 1930s, and surviving examples now rank among the world#8217;s most valuable cars.

At 2.28 million Euros ex factory, the new tribute isn#8217;t exactly one of the cheapest. It#8217;s a left-hand drive only proposition too, if the price hasn#8217;t put you off.

The composite bodywork is in black with the carbon fibre weaving visible in direct light, while each door trim has a hand-stitched silhouette of the Atlantic coupe.

#8220;About a month ago we starting presenting our legends,#8221; said Dr Schreiber, #8220;so we will create cars always related to very important persons or special cars in the history of Bugatti, six different legends.

#8220;The first was a homage to Jean-Pierre Wimille, that racing driver who won#160;Le Mans#160;twice. And this one is the second and four more will follow, six in total all limited to three cars.#8221;

As for the viability of such a low volume manufacturer, he wouldn#8217;t be drawn into specifics, saying only #8220;We are on a good way to becoming profitable.#8221;

Rival car makers such as#160; McLaren #160;and#160; Ferrari #160; have admitted defeat in challenging the Veyron’s top speed, instead claiming its latest hybrid hypercars -#160; the P1 #160;and#160; LaFerrari #160;respectively – have been developed to be the fastest cars around the famed Nurburgring circuit.

Porsche #160;has laid down the guantlet with confirmation this week that its#160; 918 Spyder is the first production car to clock a sub-seven minute lap #160;on the 20.6 Norsdschleife circuit.

Poll: Should the Bugatti Veyron successor be even faster?
