2014 BMW X5

BMW will launch the new X5 with a base price tag verging on $100,000 when the new model arrives in November.

The all-new X5 SUV will initially only be available in three trim levels – the X5 xDrive30d at $99,900 plus costs; the X5 xDrive50i at $133,900 plus costs; and the X5 M50d at $147,900 plus costs.

That makes for a $7000 price hike for the entry-level model, up from $92,245 of the current version – though BMW says it has added plenty of equipment to offset the additional cost.

The price increase does, however, give BMW room to add a 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder rear-wheel-drive model as its entry-level variant. That car would be better positioned to take on the Mercedes-Benz ML250 , which kicks off at $82,900.

#8220;All variants available to our market are under consideration,#8221; says BMW Australia product communications manager Scott Croaker.

#8220;It#8217;s a vehicle that#8217;s untested in this market, a rear-wheel-drive SUV of this type. So that#8217;s something we#8217;ll need to take into consideration.#8221;

The new X5 range in detail:

BMW X5 xDrive50i – $133,900 plus on-road costs

Equipment over the 30d includes 20-inch alloys, standard metallic paint, adaptive suspension, LED headlights, active cruise control with stop and go, heated front seats, auto tailgate, digital radio connectivity and a Harman Kardon stereo.

BMW X5 M50d – $147,900 plus on-road costs

Powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder triple-turbo engine producing 280kW and 740Nm. Its 0-100km/h time is down to 5.3 seconds (-0.1s) and fuel use is down 0.8L to 6.7L/100km. All-wheel-drive with an eight-speed sports automatic with paddle-shifters as standard.
