GS Dakar 2004 model Fuel injected

Bought my BMW F650GS Daker in September 2010 with 19000 miles on the clock after a long time researching adventure bikes, The final choice was between the Honda Transalp 650cc or the BMW 650 Dakar.

Decided on the Dakar as was a taller and in my opinion a nicer looking bike which came with ABS brakes as standard,

So after two months of ownership and approx 1000 mile later I can now comment on the likes and dislikes of the bike,

Had many problems with the bike starting from cold, The engine revs would race to 3000-3500 rpm for a few seconds on start up and the exhaust header pipe would also glow red hot when idling from cold.

This bike has no manual choke as it’s Fuel injected, I had to carry out a re-set to the engine control unit every few days to stop this from happening, This involved disconnecting the engine computer unit’s main wiring plug for a few hours, After connecting the plug back on you start the bike up and leave the bike idling without touching the throttle until the cooling fan came on.

After a Month of this I arranged for my local BMW Bike dealer to check the bike over and they found various stored fault codes in engine control unit, the codes were cleared and bike seems OK so far,

The engines which are made by an Austrian company called Rotax for BMW are very unrefined at idle and up to 4000rpm, They rattle like mad from idle, This is not a fault as I have been told they can sound like Tractors with marbles inside as explained to me by a BMW Forum I have joined, Also you must not ride these bikes below 3000 rpm as it’s an over square engine, This can take some getting used too,

The Gear selection into first gear with the bike stationery is very clunky, Again this is normal on this type of bike and many other different types of BMW Bikes,

If you can live with the clunky Gear selection, Rattling from the engine, Keeping the engine revs above 3000rpm, The temperamental fuel injection system and having no fuel gauge but a warning light when the fuel level is very low then you WILL LOVE THIS BIKE,

The Power delivery / torque and liveliness from this single cylinder bike is great, you cannot believe the way the engine responds between 3000-6000rpm,

The Long Suspension travel has no problem with any bad road surface while still remaining comfortable at the same time; I was very impressed with this, Also another good feature is the heated hand grips with two heat settings that really work well,

The high riding position where you can easily see over the cars roofs allowing you to plan well ahead,

Even with the bikes shortfalls I am still pleased with my choice and yes I would recommend this Bike but take a test ride first.
