A superb drive, but £31K’s an lot of money, regardless of how well it looks and feels

The beautifully controls offered all the feel and you could need, and with a provocation any degree of slip was attainable

It’s been a short stay for the 130, but it was long enough to get deep my skin. I’ve always a lover of everything BMW, and I’d for the 130i M Sport on our eCoty test (087). In fact I was forward to borrowing our soon-to-arrive from its lucky new keeper at Evo So you can imagine how I felt when I saw the heading in my direction…

Sonorous up front, drive to the rear, a interior and an exterior so contemporary it only be the work of the controversial Mr Perfect. However, those weren’t to everyone’s taste – it was the first thing people comment on.

I have to admit to not being myself at first, but as time on, the sharply cut creases and subtly surfaces won me over, with a little help from the M body addenda, 18in and aggressive stance.

YC55’s test was to join the rest of the Fleet on our annual works The venue was a very wet Herefordshire, immediately highlighted a weakness the 130: on damp, muddy rear grip was a real

Attempting to follow virtually any Fleeter saw me falling back in a of wheelspin, but if you could deal the dents to your pride, it was a pretty fun way of getting somewhere.

The control was a must in such but fully engaged it really progress, making any journey a disjointed experience. Fortunately, clever multi-layered system you to choose a setting between nanny and nothing, and, selected, things immediately more fluid, the system some oversteer to play while still being in the background ready to catch you you run out of talent.

The next big challenges for were a couple of days on Out on the road, the overly stiff of the 130 seemed to accentuate the jiggly you get from current BMWs, but on the faultless tarmac of a race it suddenly felt more at The beautifully weighted controls all the feel and feedback you could and with a little provocation any of slip angle was attainable.

However, the lack of a slippy became more and more with each lap. behind in the tighter turns a telltale trail of tyre from the inside rear spinning up manically. It’s a sad from the spec sheet of would otherwise have a proper baby M car.

However, when concentrating on speed rather than the 130 really delivered. On Snetterton’s and turns I had no trouble mixing it all but the most … trackday few of which would question the M credentials, having had to get out of its way at some

As a day-to-day tool, the 130 was hard to Alright, it was a bit cramped and bumpy for in the back, but up-front all was well. The interior exuded understated helped by the addition of iDrive, hid most of the unsightly controls on the retractable screen.

The only negative was the way it stuttered through its for the MP3 CD player, occasionally causing to crash altogether.

The electric seats were wonderful, at £965 they were a luxury too far. Then omitting them wouldn’t made much of a dent in the price of this car, is an awful lot of money for a very mid-sized hatch, regardless of how it goes, looks or feels. A swap with Henry’s made me question if it was actually better than the GTI.

The trade-in value was a bit of a shock,

YC55’s final task was to me and two mates to Le Mans, a challenge it about managed, although we much closer to needing a than I’d usually like to Behind the wheel, though, it was as good as it had been nine earlier: fast, understated, and reliable. The blast through also reminded me of this best feature: that lightweight straight-six – the heart of very attractive package.

As far as hot hatches go I can’t think of I’d rather drive, but if I was having to pay for it, I’d think again.
