BMW 116i Sport Review

been playing with the new BMW Sport

This week we the BMW 116i Sport in for review and test. Is the new entry-level BMW experience a big forward?

It#8217;s hard to that the BMW 1 Series has been us for seven years, or maybe just a sign of getting So this week we get the all new BMW 116i in for a week of review and road to see if the slightly controversial 1 Series has a bit more BMW in its second generation.

The 1 brought something new to the premium party when it arrived a proper driver#8217;s RWD setup, BMW hasn#8217;t forsaken for the latest 1 Series apparently 80 per cent of 1 Series think their car is FWD), so a car lover#8217;s perspective the 116i comes well-equipped for a bit of fun.

The new 1 also comes with an of the original 1 Series#8217; styling, a long nose and a squat a bit like a rounded Reliant GTE on a boil wash. It#8217;s a it or hate it shape, but to our eyes it pretty good, at least at the although in profile it does slightly odd proportions.

The original 1 Series was a bit lacking in a bit low on quality and not exactly at the top-end of BMW dynamics. So does the new 1 Series those issues #8211; in the way the new X3 has or is it still a bit of a BMW anti-climax?

BMW 116i – inside and out

When BMW launched the new 1 we had comments running from it#8217; to #8216;Can someone pass me something to cover my so it#8217;s clear the looks of the new 1 are polarizing. But that seems to be the way BMWs, even after Bangle left.

“#8230;so clear the looks of the new 1 Series are But that seems to be the way with even after Chris left”

What BMW has done with the 1 #8211; apart from the original styling #8211; is it bigger and, despite the in size, make it lighter They#8217;ve also made that two-thirds of the extra in the wheelbase has gone to the rear so although you won#8217;t get a rugby in the back, it#8217;s not restricted to children anymore.

Up front more room, and it#8217;s to get comfortable and feel in control. The gets updated to look like the latest high-end the steering wheel has a nice and, even though a lot of plastics around, they do decent quality and the shiny dash trim looks with its red inserts.

Which all up to a cabin that#8217;s a chunk than the original 1 Series, if it#8217;s not quite the leap BMW with the X3. Equipment in this Sport is not exactly lavish for a car, and the screen that on top of the dash won#8217;t be able to you how to get to where you#8217;re going.

The BMW 116i#39;s interior improves

BMW Sport – Performance on the road

we have in the 116i Sport is the powerful petrol-engined BMW 1 Series on despite which it offers enough performance with and 162lb/ft of torque resulting in a of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. not enough to frighten hot hatches, but it is to make decent progress.

Use the you do have available and you won#8217;t get close to claimed 49.6mpg, but we did average 41.2mpg a week of less than motoring. And on a long drive of motoring it came in at 46.6mph far from shoddy for a nippy, premium hatch.

“#8230;the is a far nicer place to be if you#8217;re driving out of rather than choice. It now with ridges and ripples instead of protesting”

What BMW has in the new 1 Series is improve the ride, wrecking the handling. The handling isn#8217;t up with the rest of the BMW but it does feel more than before. That unless you provoke it to do otherwise it tend towards understeer, the RWD.

But the 116i is a far nicer place to be if you#8217;re out of necessity rather than It now deals with ridges and competently instead of protesting, and an all-round more comfortable experience for and passengers. It#8217;s not gone #8211; the ride is still and feels quite sporty but the balance compromise if far better before.

Steering is good with the old steering replaced by a new steering which could been a numbing experience, but #8211; it#8217;s fluid and and easy to know where pointing. The brakes are terrific with plenty of feel and good stopping power.

So all the new 1 Series is a better drive the old 1 Series, more comfortable, rewarding and more accurate. But run away with the idea Series is a smaller 3 Series; not. But it is an able and enjoyable compact that#8217;s now fun to drive.

BMW 116i Sport – Verdict

BMW has to evolve the original 1 Series in to a better entry point to the BMW club than we expected.

“#8230;all the new 1 Series is a better drive the old 1 Series, more comfortable, rewarding and more accurate.”

The of the original long bonnet, tail may not be to everyone#8217;s liking, but it does the 1 Series a bit more individual and it does from most angles look exactly how you#8217;d a compact premium car should decently dynamic with a of sporty promise.

The driving experience in the 116i is too, with a much comfortable ride without dynamics, good steering and better brakes. There#8217;s something a bit detached about the compared to BMW#8217;s more offerings but #8211; just the X3 #8211; BMW has managed to bring the 1 properly in to the BMW fold with a car actually can be mentioned in the same as the rest of the BMW range.

The new BMW 1 Series is not but it is actually appealing.
