BaT Exclusive: 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45 Troopy

This 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45 is the desirable long-wheelbase troop carrier version that was never imported to the USA. This one was restored to be driven and enjoyed on and off the road, and there are over $37,000 in receipts to show for the mechanical restoration completed earlier this year at JL Fabricating in Puyallup, Wa. The truck is largely unmodified, with the exception of a recent conversion to fuel injection on the venerable 2F 6 cylinder engine.

This RHD Troopy was legally imported in to the USA from Australia, and carries a clean title according to the seller. It has had four adult owners since new and has been very well looked after. There are 109,400 original km’s (approx.

68,000 miles) on the odometer and the truck is now available in Seattle, Washington for $42k.

A body restoration was completed in winter 2010 by the previous owner. The body is very straight and was painted the original Beige color with no filler according to the seller. The roof is painted white, and all bumpers are black. The front features a brush guard and a tasteful pair of halogen lamps.

Side and rear doors all close and latch solidly and glass is in excellent condition, with a medium tint added to the rear. All sliders work and latch. All original body badges are still present and have a great patina.

The BF Goodrich 31#215;10.5#215;15 tires have approximately 1,000 miles on them and are mounted on polished aluminum wheels. A spare tire on a steel wheel is located underneath the rear of the chassis. Despite the offroad tires, the Troopy drives very well according to the seller.

He says it tracks and brakes in a straight line, and is comfortable to drive at 60 mph. It handles like a truck, not a sportscar, but doesn’t have any bad habits.

The interior is in impressive shape. All gauges work, the instrument cluster is beautiful, the front and rear heaters work well and look new. The floor mats are in perfect condition and all the factory tools are present.

It has also had a brand new headliner recently installed, so there are no sags and no smudges.

The most significant upgrade was the addition of a throttle body injection (TBI) system to replace the standard carburetor. This has provided improvements in horsepower, torque, and fuel economy. The Troopy’s 2F engine starts the first time, every time, hot or cold. The fuel injection upgrade includes an HEI distributor, new ECU, and fuse panel, intake manifold, and oxygen sensor welded in to the exhaust. The whole system was professionally tuned on a chassis dyno after install.

The coolest part is that the factory air cleaner assembly has been adapted to fit the TBI manifold. Unless you look carefully, you will not notice that the induction is not stock.

Other recent work includes a cylinder head rebuild, new exhaust and heat shield, new starter, new alternator, new radiator, new water pump, new battery, new master and slave brake cylinders, new wheel cylinders, new brake lines, all hubs rebuilt and bearings repacked or replaced, new u-joints in the drivelines, new shocks, new steering stabilizer, and more. All receipts are available. As we#8217;ve seen with many Land Cruisers, the seller says that this was a restoration job that just got out of hand and he wishes it was worth as much as he has into it.

This truck is fully sorted and can be enjoyed for many years to come. It needs nothing but a new owner with aspirations of camping, fishing, or just cruising in style. The cargo area is large enough to put a full size inflatable mattress in back.

It is ready for expedition use and is possibly the cleanest Troopy in the USA.
