Design Notes: 1988 Corsica

From edgy to

By the mid 1980s small cars rapidly becoming a hot commodity in the auto market. Domestic had been bolstering their ranks for sometime but Chevrolet#8217;s X-car, the Citation, introduced in as a 1980 model, had formidable new and was headed for the proverbial pasture 1985.

The end of that model#8217;s short lifespan would in a vacancy for 1986 in Chevy#8217;s between the Cavalier and Celebrity. position was to be filled by their compact sedan, the Corsica, for

Wait#8230; for 1987? Or was it 1988? sorta both.

What#8217;s in a model year?

global markets identify new models and their subsequent versions with a series-type rather than correlating the with a year (similar to how computer software will updates when they are not annually). Associating vehicle with a model year is a North American practice.

to historic accounts, the idea assigning calendar year to vehicles originated at General during the 1920s. It was conceived by P. Sloan as an innovative means of interest on the part of the consumer. The use of a year for vehicles quickly a standard here and, at to Americans, seems a natural to a model name.

Even though the yearly system seems fairly at times there can be ambiguity. A example is the first-generation Cadillac was it a 1975 or 1976 model There are certainly differences of on that matter, as discussed in prior post: Design 1975 Cadillac Seville .

example would be the subject of post, the Chevy Corsica. this one seems a little to wade through than the Chevy did in fact produce a model year Corsica but were a mere 8,973 and those were only through leases to rental and, to a lesser degree, for use on lots and internally at Chevrolet.

The reason or reasons for that are not clear in any of the documentation I#8217;ve but one reason could be its late as a 1987 model. It appears the wasn#8217;t officially announced January of that same

Further, there was no marketing or taken out for the 1987 model. to Thomas A. Staudt, Chevrolet#8217;s marketing manager at the time, we#8217;ve learned from launches in the past is that ones depend on having availability of product once the effort begins. We view Corsicas and Berettas [Corsica’s brother] to the daily rental as an extra exposure opportunity. Corsica and Beretta on the road is a billboard pointing to a Chevrolet because that#8217;s where a can really find out what the are all about.#8221;

Another reason might to do with quality control. The car with Beretta, which be covered in a future Design was heralded for its advancements in fit and finish. when the car was officially launched to the on March 12, 1987, accompanied by a advertising and marketing campaign, it was a 1988.

Of note, it was estimated by Chevy#8217;s manager at the time that a quarter-million copies would be in its first full year. I was unable to determine exactly that sales number I did find out that there 291,163 built as 1988s and it was regarded a success.

Okay, of this background stuff. to the gravy.

Concept sketches

I have any dates for the following but one of them has what appears to be written on it. Click on the pictures to see the versions.

Those are pretty nice. The lines on the car sketched above look incredible. The rear of the car in the above right reminds me of the of a Geo Storm.

The rear of the car sketched draws clear lines to the generation Camaro from its to the C-pillars and hatch#8217;s curved this one is a proposed five-door that didn#8217;t make the cut but did show up as an optional body for 1989.
